Hi There,

This is my first time on the forum,so not sure how it usually works.

I was diagnosed with type 2 on New Years eve and have been trying to get to grips with it since.

I'm on metformin and gliclazide twice daily. My levels are starting to come down (they were around 16 when I was first diagosed), but I'm still losing weight which is a problem as I was slim to begin with. My GP and Diabetic nurse are concerned about my continued weight loss and both think I may need insulin, but I'm not convinced. I've been referred to the local hospital and have an appointment in a few weeks time with the diabetic clinic.

Most information I've been reading focuses on losing weight as part of controlling diabetes, but there is little out there for people whose weight is ok. Is there anyone else out there who is in a similar boat?

Hi Libbyloo and welcome to the forum.

Many of us have a bit of spare tyre they can afford to lose but when that rapidly disappears some of us are facing weight loss they do not want.

My consultant has reassured me that my weight will plateau so I am carrying on regardless with the thought in mind that I suppose it is better to be thin than without my sight or my feet.

It will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Hang on in there, explore the forum and ask questions when you need to. Hopefully there will be others along who may have a more useful answer for you.

Hi Libbyloo and welcome (I'm new too!)

When I first found out that I was diabetic last November, I too had lost a lot of weight ( a stone in 2 weeks ) and I'm very slim already.
They treated me initially as a Type 2 and put me on Gliclazide which brought my levels down initially but then they went all over the place!

Eventually it was decided that I was a Type 1 and went on to Insulin. Do you think this might be the case with you?
I hope they will tell you more at your next appointment, but in the meantime read through some of the posts on this forum and hopefully you might find a post that you can identify with.

Sorry I couldn't help more. Good luck.

Hi

I'm new here too. I was diagnosed at the beginning of Dec and am still getting to grips with it all. I'm not slim but I'm not overweight either - bmi 23.5 and I've never really been overweight - borderline, perhaps at times following 2 pgs. I'm also, apparently, fairly young to be Type 2 at 35. I'm finding it hard not to lose weight just because of cutting out sugar, low-carbing to some extent and doing extra exercise. I was told 'don't lose any more weight' at my check up a couple of weeks ago. It's frustrating. I'm taking prolonged release metformin 4 x 500mg per day to see if thta can get things under control but have to do an extra sample test in 2 weeks because they want to check my acetate/ketones levels which were on the high side at the check-up.

I don't really have any useful advice and am still very new to all this. I feel a bit out of control of it all because I can't really do much more on my own to lower my bg levels and if it is still not under control when I go back in 2 1/2 months time I'm not sure what they will suggest.

Just wanted to say 'hi - you're not alone' really.

Hi Sharlieboo, Castaway and Synonym,

Thanks for your responses. It's good to know I'm not alone. I have to say I was beginning to feel a bit down and out about all of this as I've been off work for the past 4 weeks (to give me time out and try to get my levels down), I'm not sure yet whether I'm ready to go back, but I'll see how it goes.

I've been whizzing around the forum as you have suggested and I can see there's loads of helpful advice and tips, which I'll be making use of. Thanks again, I'll keep you posted.
