Good Day to you all!

I am the wife of a diabetic, type 2, and we are just beginning this journey in a way. James has been diagnosed for a year but has pretty much ignored it, except for medications, for the entire year. Now, his a1c is up (245) and the doctor has given him one more chance for diet and exercise to work for him before beginning insulin. She prescribed Jardiance but so far, it seems to be doing nothing. We have completely changed our diet to a diet leaning more toward Mediterranean with more vegetables, fruits, chicken, and turkey. We removed red meat and are concentrating on lowering sugar intake (that is the hard part). I have committed to living the same lifestyle as I am overweight and it would benefit me as well.

The main issue right now is that, despite changing up things, his BS is still really high at 314 this morning after sleeping 4 hours. We do understand that, ultimately, insulin may be what he needs, but wanted to make sure that we do everything we can before having to do that so that we are already eating right before starting it.

This is difficult! Not impossible because I see that you all are doing it well, and hopefully I will learn a lot from you so that we can get him healthy again!

Hi and welcome aboard,

Great that you are helping your husband and joining in yourself.
The Mediterranean diet is one way of controlling this condition, but you do need to be careful with certain aspects of it, especially fruit and carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, rice and potatoes, plus anything made with flour. I must also ask why you have cut out red meat ...... that won't help with blood sugar levels. Obviously sugar needs removing from the diet .. and yes, that can be hard, but needs must.

Was his increased HbA1c a shock, or did you know it would be that high? Has he been self testing at all? A glucose meter and regular structured testing is important. The HbA1c is very high.

Can you tell us which medications he is on? That will help us to help him.

Hope this helps
