I was diagnosed 2 weeks ago with Type 2 Diabetes. Partly age (56) and I do remember my grandmother having Diabetes. I'd had 2 fasting blood tests which were at 16.
I've been on 40mg of Gliclazide twice a day for 2 weeks and testing myself daily, before breakfast for just over a week. The 7 day average is 7.4 and todays test was 6.4. Also noticed that I'm not thirsty anymore. Actually I've not been drinking enough the last 2 days and got a headache from de-hydration. The pain/numbness in my foot has decreased.
Had my first session with the practice Diabetes nurse today. A really nice lady who seemed to have lots of time to talk and answer questions. Some of the stuff was a bit scary but I guess I have to get used to it.
Some good news:
I might be able to come off the medication in a few months and try diet and exercise.
Have a prescription for test strips and multiclix.
Prescriptions are free.
I've been reading a lot on these forums about diet, mine's always been pretty good. Just have to experiment a bit and get the balance right. I'm planning to exercise a lot more, the poor dogs have never walked so far as they have the last week or so!
Have to lose about 14lb to get to a normal weight for my height (6ft 1in) but the diet and exercise should solve that.
I'm really determined to control my Diabetes with diet and exercise so any advice or help is welcomed. Sorry if I'm rambling a bit but it helps me feel better.

See if there is anything in this advice that may help you.
