Hey, I am new to this site and I must say there is lots of good info on here.

I am a Type 2 Diabetic and was diagnosed when I was 16 (am now 24) and have only been trying to control it for the last couple of months. I thought (stupidly) it would go away and couldn't admitt to having it.

I started taking Metformin just before Christmas but recently I had to come off them because they were making me very sick. I am also not very good with what I eat and I am trying so hard not to give in but sometimes its hard as its around me most of the time.

I don't have a blood sugar testing kit as the doctor wont give me one and he said there is no point in buying one as the strips are too expensive so I'm a bit stuck on what to do with that! I would love to know what my blood sugar level is! I just have to guess and I have no idea!

I am hoping to learn a few things from this site and talk to others as well!

xx

hello, you're right there's plenty of good advice and friendly knowledgeable people here, I've found that from knowing things I've been able to make small changes and get big results. I wasn't given a blood meter either, so I decided to make sure I lost weight as I could measure that on the scales. If my sugars never came down I could then tell the doc that my results with weight show that if I can measure things I can improve them so I deserve a meter, as it happened my sugars improved dramatically too. I guess cutting down on the bread worked wonders, good luck with your changes

Welcome to the forum.

It is very common for gps to refuse to prescrobe tests to type 2 diabetics purely on the basis of costs, maybe you would consider signing the petition on this site thats to try make testing available to all diabetics.

In the mean timeThere is a new blood monitor that can be purchased on amazon and ebay, SD codefree monitor, with test strips as little as £4.99 for 50.

Hi Babz and welcome to the forum Despite what your doctor says, it is necessary for you to test. You need to test to start with, before and 2 hours after meals, to see which foods you can eat, and which you need to reduce or cut out altogether. Once you know this you can test less. Free meters are generally available from manufacturers if you ask, but check the price of the strips which go with them and choose the cheapest. You will get some strips with the meter. After that, many members buy their strips from ebay. Since you would love to know what your levels are then I suggest that you just go ahead and your health will be better for it.

Here is the information we give new members and I hope it will be useful for you. Ask as many questions as you need to as there is always someone here to help.

Thanks everyone for all your help! And I will definately check out Ebay! I didn't even think of looking there!

Thank you x

Hi Babz,

I was diagnosed at 20 as a type 2 and was told that I didn't need to test either.

It is hard with food around you. I love chocolate and have a very sweet tooth!

Keep us updated with how you get on.
