Hi, this is on behalf of my mum, who has had diabetes for seventy years, and is recieving eye drops for glycoma[Ranfort] which she applies last thing at night,at 9.30 she injects Lantis, she has managed her levels impecably all her life but is suffering levels of 20 in the morning, any ideas?????
Hi @gedlyJO, Seeing her doctor is the first thing to do.
From my experience as a diabetic and not as professional advice or opinion:
BSLs can go up for all sorts of reasons such as infection, stress and worry, change in diet and things with fancy names like Dawn Phenomenon (DP) (body prepares for waking up from about 4 am and this causes insulin to not work as efficiently in the early to ? mid morning). Why something like DP should appear is a quandary and I imagine the other causes are usually sorted first.
Looking up the eye drops for her glaucoma, Ganafort is the closest I could find to your spelling. If these are the ones, the side-effects and precautions include that one component of the drops can cause some drop in blood pressure and lessen the early symptoms of hypos (shakes, rapid heart beat ect). Perhaps the doctor can find something about rise in BSLs but I could not as a side-effect. (refr. netdoctor.co.uk).
I am guessing that your mum is on Lantus only because she is a Type 2 diabetic. If so, it may be that Lantus is no longer sufficient but perhaps it was safer for her to take Lantus and not the short-acting insulins before because of risk of low blood sugars (hypos). At the very least it sounds like good sound medical assessment and advice is her best bet. Best Wishes to you both !
Definitely get her to speak to her GP. I had a similar problem with Lantus, and was changed to another long-acting insulin - actually a lower dose, which immediately solved the problem. It seemed that my body was too used to the Lantus.
Thankyou to all that replied, I'm sorry it took so long to reply as I'm not on the net that often, my mum has since changed her doctor ( her surgery closed, thankfully ) she has now seen a much better informed doctor who has told her to up the dose of Lantus and to immediatly phone him if she experiences any hypos during the day. So now a couple of weeks have passed and her blood sugar levels are down to 5 in the morning which both her and i are very happy about!! Just to confirm my mum is type one.....eats a pound of roddas clotted cream a week and is the same weight she was on her wedding day 57 years ago!! Sincere thanks to you all xx
