High Blood Sugar / Panic Attacks

I have been Type 1 for 2 and a half years now. For the first year I didn't care about my levels, missed doctors appointments and generally rebelled against it (I was 17). Within the last 6 months I have become more conscious of my health but with it have developed this anxiety / hypochondriac-ness! I regularly get panic attacks (disorientation, trembling, increased heart rate, confusion) - all hypo symptoms, so I check my blood and am in fact HIGH BG? I have bought this up with my GP but he seems to only take me seriously if I fainted on the floor in front of him. I never used to get panic attacks before, I'm so unsure whether these are physical side effects of erratic BG /high BG or just emotional anxiety over having diabetes? Has anyone else experienced this when they are high? or developed panic disorder after being diagnosed?

Hi hmj

Ive had type 2 now since December 2010 but not until I was rushed to a&e few weeks ago had I suffered serious panic attacks I had 1 late at night on first day I was in hospital my fiance had to talk me down from doing somthing stupid that was after consultant said the surgeons and anesthesia consultant would be up with no explanation to why the 2nd time was at work my boss told me that I was having a workplace medical and drugs test I knew if I failed I would be suspended no pay until issue was Sorted I fled the job in tears it was so embarasing and I'm 33 yro bloke spent whole night shaking and crying my bg was good at time but I would say it can be emotional rollercoaster if ur bg serious up n down but I'm getting my mojo back I find pets Great therapy tools as I spend up to 2 weeks away I love thinking about my dog getting home playing with him rough n tumble around the garden n house so I would try not to let it get u down to much

hmj83,

As a suggestion I would either see another gp in the practice or ask to be referred over to the care of the diabetes clinic at your local hospital, anxiety and panic attacks should be taken seriously and I'm very surprised your doctor has not acted.

Hopefully if you do get referred they will work with you to stabilise your bg levels and see if that helps with the anxiety and panic attacks, if it doesn't then they'll write to your gp anyways with a view to start some treatment.
