High Blood Sugar when waking up.

Hello fellow Type1'ers... =)

I have a problem with my long acting levemir doses... Waking up in the morning my blood sugar is usually above 12 mmols, I take 60 units of levemir after my evening meal. (which is the maximum dosage on my insulin pen btw)

I'm wondering why I'm not achieving a good reading in the morning using such a large dosage. Any ideas??

Also going to ask my GP about and insulin pump next time i'm seeing her (I'm getting the blood sugar in the morning checked with her, so thought I may as well ask, I've researched the pump and think I would be a good idea) what do you guys think about the pump??

Cheers

Hi,

It could be that such a large dose of long acting insulin could be making you go hypo in your sleep then you body is correcting it itself by 'liver dumping' so your waking up with high BG's!

Try waking yourself up at 2am then 4am to test and see how your BG's are doing over night.

What are your BG's like before you go to bed? if your long acting is correct you should be waking up quite close to how you go to bed.

Another reason could be the 'dawn phenomenon' where you body releases hormones during the night to prepare your body for the next day which pushes your BG's up.

Some people try eat a non carb snack before bed to try fool the body into not doing this, this is also something you could try if testing at night doesnt show anything.

I'm due to get a pump over the next 2 months so i can't offer practical advice but from my personal point of view for the right person from what i've read can be almost magical

Have you ever been on the DAFNE course or something similar? it teaches you how to carb count and adjust your insulin as to what you eat and also teaches you to spot patterns in your BG readings to also tweak your background insulin too! this may be something that would be of use to you and is also usually a must to be able to get a pump!

Hope this helps you a little, and hope you go for a pump too if you do find you really want one too
