im a type 2 diet controlled and lately since being under immense stress my levels have gone from 5.8 to a reading of 13.9, only some days but recently I have had over 5 readings in the above 10? Is it something I'm eating or not? Very worried

Welcome, and well done on being diet controlled.

Stress can increase blood glucose (BG) levels for sure, so can infection. Are we talking about fasting BGs, and have they been in the 5s for a long time and went up suddenly? It could be due to several factors and the key thing will be look for trends rather than individual results. I would say, if they are still up this high after another week, then make an appointment with your doctor or nurse to find out what's going on. And if you develop symptoms suggesting an infection then make an appointment straight away.

Have you made big changes in what you are eating recently?

No changes in diet at all!. Only stress has increased have had 11 high readings for me. Doctor always said until number is in double figures I should not worry.. Being between 4 & 5 until pat 2 weeks now over 10? Not in triple figures so shud I worry?

Past not pat

Had many blood test which show an outoimmune disease but no sign of infection. Testing for dermoytosists, perineal vascular and or lupus.... Have symptoms that can be any of the 3. Don't know if it eve lares BG levels?

Hello treacle61
Can I ask when you are testing, before or after a meal? Or do you do random tests through the day.

I think your doctor is not quite right, I worry if the number is over 8. But don't worry, because over the next week or so I think you and your doctor will be able to get those levels back down somehow. It's just a case of figuring out what is causing the increase.

I think inflammation could raise BGs like infection does, and maybe one of those 3 conditions could be doing it. I don't know much about the first two but I know lupus can be very hard to diagnose. And it flares up from time to time so that could explain the sudden increase in BGs. It's also made worse by stress. I think you should see your doctor about these high BGs. If they don't start coming down of their own accord then your doctor may need to consider medication to help.

And, try not to worry too much about these BGs, because they are not dangerously high (eg 20+) and I think they would only be at risk of being harmful if they went on for a long time. I'm sure you will be able to bring them down before they have a chance of doing long term damage. Take care xx

Just thinking out side the box here ..yes stress will cause sugars to rise ... but have your just opened a new box of test strips .. If so try a different test strip to confirm the numbers .. last time my sugars were reading high without changing my diet ..it was a faulty box of test strips
