I'm 17. What is considered a high blood sugar honestly. My doctor says 7 is high, I have a few other doctors and they said 9 is high. I'm so confused!!!!

Personally I am very unhappy with self-test readings above 6.8 an hour after a meal I try and keep in the range 4.2 to 5.8 two hours after a meal.

@bluetit got that right .... double digits no way, and anything over 7 is not really desirable, but totally depends on meals, testing times and quite a few other factors. In effect, both docs are right. Mike

As per @Bluetit1802 link, this is what we want to achieve in order to have minimal risks of complications, microvascular and nerves damages due to chronically elevated blood glucose.

For the majority of healthy individuals, normal blood sugar levels are as follows:

  • Between 4.0 to 6.0 mmol/L (72 to 108 mg/dL) when fasting
  • Up to 7.8 mmol/L (140 mg/dL) 2 hours after eating
