How am I doing?
I am an 80 year old male who was diagnosed type 2 diabetic 8 months ago. I had presented my doctor with a list of half a dozen things that were bothering me. She ordered a blood test which showed that my blood was out of limits on just about everything measured, including blood sugar which was 100.0. Since then I have been taking Metformin, Lisinopril and Simvastin. I have had my eyes inspected and my feet stroked. I have cut out chocolate, cakes and most alcohol. I try to walk 10,000 paces per day (Fitbit One). My blood is lovely now, except for the HBa1c measure, which has halved but is still too high – the doctor says. My pre-breakfast sugar level is about 7 and my BP is OK.
Unfortunately, all the things that bothered me 8 months ago are unchanged. I am tired, I don’t sleep well, I have bladder problems, I have a very dry mouth during the night and my eyes feel congested. I wonder to myself – am I diabetic – or have I got something else. Or is it just old age.
