Yes, dogs are often much more than just our best friends. We have had at least one discussion fairly recently that I'm aware of about diabetic helper dogs.

I am currently fostering a lovely black lab. She is going to be service dog. One of the six possible field she might be trained for is diabetic alert. Although I will be sad to send her back for training, I am getting eager to here what field she will enter.

I agree with you Janie, the people who do this sort of thing have my great admiration! Having had a number of my own dogs sinc ethey were little pups, I don't know how they can part with these dogs once they've stolen their hearts!

Years ago when I took my first dogs to obedience training classes, there were several ladies there who did the initial acclimatization and basic obedience training for the Guide Dogs for the Blind puppies - the class did fundraising for them too. The wife of one of my husband's work mates used help with Hearing Dogs for the Deaf which at the time was a fairly new charity in the UK. She and her dogs (Norwegian Buhunds) also did fundraising regularly around Newbury, the dogs carried little collection boxes on their backs.
