How do I know if I have type 1 or 2?

Type of diabetes
Type 1
Hi there

Excuse my ignorance but yesterday after a spat of blood tests for the past week it was confirmed I have diabetes; what type I am not sure; and neither is the doctor. I am in central Africa; resources here are limited same as testing facilities and medication.

My other problem comes in as there is blood from the kidneys but they cannot test further than blood tests though they did say it is urgent that the problem gets resolved and went as far to say I need a renal biopsy however in central Africa that is not possible.

Can anyone give me some idea as how I am to find out what diabetes I have or is there some unwritten findings on how to treat it regardless whether I know the type or not? Also could there be a relationship of the kidney problem and diabetes and how necessary is the biopsy?

I'm looking forward to any information to keep my mind at peace as right now it is running rampant.

Kind regards
Lezally

Welcome.
you say you have had blood tests. What were the results?
The essential difference in Type 1 is that it is an auto-imune loss of insulin producing cells in the pancreas, so testing for that auto-imune response would be the ideal test in the ideal world!
No matter which type you are, the initial target will be to reduce your BG levels in a controlled manner, whether that is by insulin, drugs or diet.
As to your kidney problem, I am not able to guess the cause or solution, but hope that your own medics can help on that!

Hi

Thanks for your reply; it is so-so appreciated!

The HbA1C read at 6.5 and where I am they cannot do further tests as facilities are not available ie auto-immune. The solution to catch 22 is to do it the natural way as they don't have the correct drugs or insulin. I know from just reading what you have accomplished it is very possible. As for the kidneys - that is a big concern as I need to establish what I should do as I don't want the situation of fixing one problem and worsening the other. Right now if I was told the solution is standing on my head whole blowing a trumpet I would give it a try because last I checked the local store didn't carry stock of human kidneys and I know well what I am heading for if it doesn't come right. All I need to establish is one is linked to the other or if it is two separate conditions.
