So I've been on these tablets for 5 weeks now (1x500mg twice a day) and am due to have my bloods done again this week. Prior to starting meds my HbA1c was 9.2% in April (I started LCHF in January), and in June was 9%. Having tried very hard with the diet it appeared to have little effect. (Although I have lost a stone in weight yay). I'm still persevering with low carb and have seen lower numbers on my meter than I have for a long time (nowhere near normal but heading the right way - 6.2 being my lowest with no sensations of a false hypo which have plagued me for a while with having high sugars). So, I'm just wondering what to expect from this weeks blood test? What results did you get after a month or so on Metformin- any improvements? Minimal? Will they increase the dose rapidly or give it a bit longer?
I have to say I don't think it affect my numbers much either - If I don't take meds for a day or so ( Metformin & Glyclazide) my numbers are only up a couple from when I do - generally in the 9's. Forxiga on the other hand is bringing my numbers down significantly.... but so is LCHF
Metformin helps reduce liver dumps and helps increase sensitivity to your own insulin. It also is supposed to have some kidney protective properties but not sure about that. It is a drug that has been around a long time and is safe and well studied. It seems to help me along with diet (VLC). It is not a wonder drug but even wonder drugs rarely are.
Metformin also works as a mild appetite suppressant for some people and can help with weight loss.
