How to add Lantus to Accu-Chek Expert

Hi,
We received the Accu-Chek Expert yesterday which my son was really looking forward too!! But I have come to a brick wall when it comes to adding the Lantus (Basal) which he has 12units at around 7.30pm. I have looked at all 3 manuals and none of them tell you how to enter your Lantus (Basal) insulin, do you add 12 units in every time you add the data in to get the insulin dose required or do you add .05 unit which is going through my son's system every hour?
I'm lost!!! Can someone help me :roll: :roll:
 
Hi,

I can't offer any advice as I don't use the Accu-chek Expert, however I do use Accu-chek meters (nano) and find that their care-line is very helpful, the number (freephone) for the care-line will be included in the instructions and they should be able to explain how you enter your basal insulin.

Hi There

When my son does his last BG before supper and bed, he then enters his bolus of 15 units every day . This is done at around 8.30p.m.

"which is going through my son's system every hour? " Does this mean your son is on a pump, cos my son is on MDI's. Maybe someone who has child who is pumping may be able to help you more. Best of Luck
 
Robert, as Stoney was wondering, if your son is on a pump try posting in the Insulin Pump Forum - the pumpers may have missed your post here.

Thanks Daisy, Stoney and Nigel!! for answering to my plea.
The Expert is not a pump but one of the new meters from Roche Accu-Chek which by entering your BG, Carbs your insulin sensitivity and other factors ie Basal, if you any residual insulin left in your body, it then works out what insulin you require at that time. Which could be great if I could work it out, I have tried calling the customer care line but unfortunatly it's closed at the weekends!!
 
The expert and the remote for the Combo are fundimentally the same meter, just that the Expert doesn't carry the Blue Tooth to communicate with Pump side of things..

The reason behind the lack of ability to put basal injections into the meter is due to it's not necessary, as this insulin isn't used in any part of the calculations by the bolus wizard...

Bolus wizard will use if availabale current BG, carbs, meal raise allowance, IOB, insulin duration to calculate the bolus required..

Even though the pump version does have logged the basal rates, it also logs TBR's that have been used as this information is also logged by the pump..

Thanks for your response earlier but I have Just been looking through different post's and I have noticed that you put a post "help with Aviva Expert" on 24th March this year, are you using the the Expert? If so can you tell me when should I add the Basal (lantus) and what amount? My son is on 12 units at 7.30pm.

Meal time
Carb's
Health

then press Bolus and it gives me the amount of Insulin required, but under the Bolus is the Basal for you to enter - but the instructions do not tell you how much to enter!!! :?

Crikey they must have cut back on the hours they are open as I am sure I have ordered batteries/control solution on a weekend before.

Hi Robert

You don't have to worry about entering the basal. Your son's basal dose is taken care of by you entering Time Blocks and then altering the Insulin Sensitivity. If your son uses 12u per day basal how much bolus is he also using? Whatever the TDD is (total daily dose of insulin basal + bolus) you just divide that amount into 100 to give you your Insulin Sensitivity. This is how much 1u will lower your son's bg by.

Time Blocks can be entered by home screen, then scroll down to Settings - enter, then next screen scroll down to Bolus Advice - enter, then next screen scroll down to Time Blocks and then enter.

You've probably got just one Time Block set up but you can alter it by highlighting the time (blue) and then entering it to create a different block of time. This will be needed to be done so that the Bolus Wizard then knows how much insulin it needs to calculate for the carb ratio you want to use. At the moment you may be prompted to use the carb ratio 1u to 10g carb but this can also be altered according to the bg tests you do and the results you get.

If you find after adding up all your TDD over a few day and you are using more insulin than you used initially re the Insulin Sensitivity and the 100 rule, then you just divide the new dose of insulin into 100 again and alter the sensitivity on the meter.

Hope this makes sense and helps a bit? Or is what I've said - a load of double dutch? :lol:
 

Hi Robert

Yes James is using the Expert and has only been doing this since March this year, so we are still learning at the moment (so no Expert - sorry for the pun). We have had a lot of help from this forum to set the machine up and I notice that ihs has given you a good format to follow.

At the moment we are struggling with carb ratio's which you might have seen in a previous post.
As for the Basal, James will do a BG before his supper, then enter his Basal at the same time, by using the downward arrow and entering the amount. He is on 16 Lantus at the moment, but we have tweeked it to yet again come back to 16. This figure was given to us by his DSN at the time of changing to MDI's.

Just had a thought, does your son split his Lantus, cos James has his in one injection only before bed, again instructions from DSN, so you may need to enter after BG in morning as well as evening.

i have been using the expert for a few months

Under basal you simply enter the number of units you are injecting at that time

Calculations and advice given are ONLY on bolus.. so you could totally ignore the basal... i personally enter the basal dose, only because i download the meter data the my computer, and the software i use logs both basal and bolus so i dont need to keep track of it with pen and paper!

but remember the meter does NOTHING with basal information, it is for your referance only!!
