Hypersensitive taste buds

I am perplexed with a change in myself. Of late (about a year, or so), I have noticed that, as soon as breathe in, I feel the taste of the smell I am breathing in me. I will clarify this further. If I use a particular spice (cinnamon, for example) or herb (such as mint) while cooking, the aroma that I breathe in immediately translates to it's flavour in my mouth. This is rather unsavoury, especially when the odour is bad.
My question is, is this also caused due to diabetes? Or, am I just hyperventilating?
Any input will be highly appreciated.
Thank you.
