When I have a bad low that lasts longer then 15 minutes, I start to get short of breath, with heavy panting and get quite worked up even when my blood sugar is going back to normal. Its almost as if the hypo causes me a panic attack. Is this normal symptoms of a hypo or is it possible that it does cause me a panic attack?
That's a tricky one to answer. I haven't experienced those symptoms, but that doesn't mean they aren't valid extended hypo symptoms. Are you prone to panic attacks?
Of course a bad hypo can bring on a panic attack, the brain is being starved of glucose and the body can go into panic mode, I've experienced it myself in my early days after being diagnosed.
Try and treat the hypo fast to prevent this happening, liquid glucose works faster then any other hypo treatment.

Yes I have had a few panic attacks non-diabetes related, but I haven't spoken to anybody or my diabetes team about it. Maybe I should phone my nurse for some help. Thank you for your reply.
I can remember my first hypo which caused uncontrollable shaking. It frightened the living daylights out of me, but luckily I realised what it was and chewed the glucose tabs, followed by a few biscuits. I don't think I had a panic attack, but I was scared witless until I returned back to normal.

Ive never had panic attacks without a hypo. I have on a few occasions experienced a panic attack while being hypo. not very often i must add, but just like you described ive had the same experience. ive been diabetic for 18 years, and i can honestly say ive experienced a panic attack about once every 5 years or so with a hypo.
