Regards dose - I was told animal insulins required a higher dose, but I don't know any more details, sorry.

I changed to Hypurin Porcine in 2008 after 4 hellish yrs suffering side effects and erratic BGs on Lantus. Been type-1 for near 22 yrs now.

Most people find that Isophane works more effectively in a split dose, and it will obviously take a bit of juggling to get it right. Can't remember exactly what Lantus dose I was on, around 30 units. I now take 22 units of Isophane about 8.30am & 12 units at 10pm and that keeps me right. My Neutral dose is about the same as for Humalog. The clinic doc who changed my insulin said I should take same dose of Isophane as for Lantus. I decided to ignore this and start from scratch, I was too scared and the doc had no experience of animal insulin, so I was wary. I took very small amounts and ate very little carbs till I got the dose right,and BGs had to run a little higher as a result.
I changed my basal insulin first, and continued using humalog until I'd sorted the Isophane dose.
As a previous Actrapid user I was worried I'd have hypo probs with Neutral as it's profile is similar. I used to find with Actrapid I'd go hypo 2 hours after I'd eaten no matter what I did. I don't have this problem with Neutral, thank god, and waiting a few minutes longer between injection & food is no hassle. My diabetes is better controlled than it's ever been. and I so wish I'd been offered animal insulin years ago,I hope it works for you too!

Did your clinic suggest you try animal insulin or was that you request?

Hi Dan,
Although the peak of Porcine Isophane is between 6-12 hours, it is till very active for up to 16 hours before it tails off, and gone by 24 hours according to the profile chart. Also neutral can start working from 1/2 hour from taking it, and tails off between 4-6 hours. I've always taken profile charts with a pinch of salt, for the simple reason that everyone is different and they are only a guide. You had gr8 control on Lantus and Levemir, but mine on Lantus was erratic and unpredictable, likewise many people on Levemir find it doesn't last 24 hours and split the dose. As I said, I had enourmous probs with hypos on Actrapid, and looking at my profiile chart the profile is very similar to Porcine Neutral which doesn't cause me such problems. Certainly not what I expected and as a result it took a few months for me to pluck up the courage to change to it.
I was using the insulins section of Diabetes UK's Balance supplement "Balance guide to testing & treating diabetes", is that the one you've got?

Sounds like we're looking at the same crude chart Dan, Are you meaning the one that shows dark pink for onset, purply-blue for peak, and dark pink fading to pale pink for the remainder. I did find it quite useful as a guide initially to guage the split and timing for my Isophane dose, but a lot of it was trial and error, which doesn't help you much I know. My chart, which is an old 2007 one,also shows Novo Nordisk's Porcine Insulatard, which has now been discontinued. That had a longer peak; wish I'd been able to try that one, shame

When I was googling to find the links for the other posts I did see some of those graphs with the peaks, but only on pet health websites! So I didn't include the links as I didn't know if it would be the same in people. But if you google hypurin activity profile you'll find them.
