Hi jodie,
Yes, your blood sugars will run high without the Lantus. It is designed to keep your blood sugar level from rising while you're not eating, such as when you're asleep, for example. The Humalog is fast acting and designed to counter the rise in blood sugar from the food you have eaten.
The Humalog will be less effective because a proportion of it will be used up trying to bring your high blood sugar down.
In your shoes, I'd take some Lantus first thing in the morning, to prevent your blood sugars from creeping up throughout the day. I can't tell you exactly how much Lantus to take, but a half-dose, for example, would help the Humalog to do it's job today. You will still have to take a 'correction dose' of Humalog in order to bring your BS into line, but don't wait until tonight before you take your next dose of Lantus.
It might be a good opportunity to begin splitting your Lantus dose, actually. Many people find it doesn't actually last for 24 hours and their blood sugars are more stable if they inject a half dose at night and the balance the following morning. This morning could be your first half-dose!
Keep testing every couple of hours today until your numbers come back into line, and good luck!
All the best,
fergus
