Well for the last week my sugars have been high in the mornings... as in around 11 to 15... contemplating increasing my basal from about 2am as my sugars at 3am have been around 7 to 9...

Im glad I was only contemplating as from 5am my sugars have been non existant from 5am this morning we have been battling to get my sugars up we suspended my pump from 6am to 9am... got a result of 4.8 so thought great, went up to 6.1 so thought even better... got out of the shop and 4.1, not brilliant but hey I had just walked round the supermarket (pump still suspended)... got home 4.2 so I put pump back on and had insulin for brekky... about 5 mins later i felt "funky" and did my sugars and 2.5... I've just finished my 2nd bottle of lucozade

I don't know where I'm going wrong... this happens 3 or 4 times a month

Quick question hun.......is it happening around the time of your period? I get different readings and hypos when its my time. If it is, get in touch with your DSN and she could set up a second profile that you can use at that time. I have a second profile on my combo pump for such times.

I would get in touch with your DSN anyway as they could think of something that your not.

Hope you get figured out xxxxx

Thanks for your response Josie 1 of the bad hypo days is usually 3 or 4 days before my period starts, however as they dont come regular it's hard to pinpoint which hypo is indicating the start. The other hypos just seem completely random, I have started keeping a record since going on the pump but cannot see any pattern, I was hoping to discuss it with my doctor (as nice as my DSN is she seems to be leaving things up to me pretty much) but they have just changed my appointment again to December (I was supposed to see him in January but I have had countless appointment changes).

I'm just getting so frustrated at the moment I am a lot more stressed than when I went onto pump and aware that this is increasing my sugars, then I seem to have had dodgy batches of insulin also not helping with keeping my sugars good... now im stressing even more that when they do my HBA1c again in November that it will have drastically gone up and they will take me off the pump

They wont take you off pump hun............they will help you tweak your basals and see if you are having any other problems. It is easy to say dont worry but i dont think you have anything to drastically worry about. My HBA1C went up after i went on my pump. I think it requires the same amount of work as MDIS

Chin up hun and if you seem to be struggling just pm me and we can try to work it out together

Josie

Hi there. For the first time in nearly 20 years of diabetes I have suddenly had a "light bulb" moment.

I have heard, though only in the last year or two about one's menstrual cycle affecting BGs & since Tuesday, I've been shelling insulin into my system like there's no tomorrow This morning, I'm starting to get a slight twinge in my tummy, which usually heralds my period starting in the next 24 hours. I've had a difficult few days at work with lots of politics getting in the way of getting the job done & have been getting very annoyed (PMS probably). My lightbulb moment came when I realised that i've read a few threads on this subject since I joined the forum.

Now then, I always suffered from erratic control & madly swinging BG levels, but, having to give myself correction doses after every meal since yesterday (which I rarely have to do for breakfast at least which is my most stable meal), I've suddenly thought that perhaps I am sitting firmly in the "2-5 days before my period equals raised BGs" camp.

I've read an article on the insulin jumpers.org website which suggests increasing my basal by 0.1 every hour which seems a lot over 24 hours, but seeing as I otherwise seem to need 40% more insulin for my carb intake than normal, this might be right.

I shall give it a go today & until my period starts & report back.

 its just frustrating me because i am having to overall increase my basal amount especially during the night... yesterday morning 14.4, this morning 9.5... im just scared because most of the hypos are random and no reason why for the most... so if i increase my basal when I do have a hypo it's going to be worse than normal... 1.1 on monday night was NOT good, my hubby almost had to call for an ambulance (that hypo seems to be my pre period hypo) I'm just glad he has no fear of needles with the amount of times he has used the glucogon

for the record I do LOVE my pump (during the day at least...) it's the diabetes I'm fighting with atm lol

Thank you Cheryl and Josie I have been at the lowest I have been ever and then the hypo's have made me feel worse had a nosey at that link cheryl and it was an interesting read... It explained a few things that happened when i was younger
Well what I have decided to do is start over (well in a few days anyway)... I know it will mean running high again during the night (or higher than it currently is) so I will be on 0.6units every hour and try and get back to where I was before I had dodgy batch of insulin... only this time I will keep track of my period and see what I can figure out

Not sure why you would need a DSN to set up another profile as the pump user should be able to achieve this themselves :?

Don't forget that if your periods are irregular then your hormone activity will also be!

3 others area's to look at though...

Infusion site, keep a note to see if there's any links. As it may be that some of your problems are due to asorbtion.. Could be caused by the needle being too near the muscle or just scaring within the fat layer..

It may be the insulin itself, or should i say human insulin, irratic bloods can be a reaction to human insulin so perhaps have a consideration of changing to animal insulin

A very long shot.. Addisons disease unperdictable drops in BG that are difficult to treat, you can eat a tonn of fast carbs and still not really get out of hypo can be an indicator so it might be worth speaking to your team concerning a synactnan test to rule this out..

Jopar - the reason my DSN helped set up another profile was because when i was having my period my sugars were all over the place and there was no set patternto the hypos and i had only been on my pump 3 months. I had always had the same problem when i was on mdi's. So sorry if i wasnt an expert after 3 months!!!!!!!!
