If your doc steps out of line, beat him over the head with facts - the downside is that this means that you have to look at and understand the available literature and be doing what the research recommends (then he has no way to criticise you and will in all likelihood look rather uncomfortable himself as docs do not, by and large, keep up with the literature...). Lots of people on the forum have given advice on where the literature is summarised in a 'user-friendly' format... (diabetes 101 was a site which was suggested to me and was great) - maybe cruise the forum and find links to the research evidence?

what the hell?! lol. ermm? complain? maybe he had a bad day. oh wel.. we have bad days nearly everyday!!! its not him who has to deal with it al he just observes it, sometimes its hard when your young or have busy lifestyles. Their job is to assess and help not make u come out of there feeling bad? If they want you to improve there shoul dbe help.. especially if youve been monitored for a while they should give you diet help or whatever or tell u to up doses. just up doses and cut out the naughty things u eat. This would really .... me off and make me feel like i didnt want to go again. Maybe ask for a different consultant. ofcrouse it can get better don't be silly! just test your blood when you have time and just up your dose of the long acting one. i had the same problem i just wasnt taking enoug insulin all roudn especially for meals afterwards id be 22 sometimes and think what the hell? pasta and stuff? especally.. pizza! x

The consultant I saw wasn't rude but I felt as if he didn't really care . Telling me how good my results were made me think "Do you know anything at all"? as I felt like my results were still too high.
I guess most doctors don't keep up with the latest research , it might ne hard to read every single article on Diabetes but they could at least try harder or what's the point of going ?

It is notoriously difficult to get most people to make significant lifestyle changes and people fall by the wayside quickly.

Perhaps having set their sights lower (eg by finding anything under 7% acceptable) they feel they need to support and encourage people who get there.

This does not help those of us who want to stop diabetes in its tracks

Know how you feel. Went to the hosp clinic today-a year since changing to pork insulin. ANOTHER newbie doctor-if they bothered to listen they'd learn a lot from us long-timers! I did find out that when I was lucky enough to see my consultant in 2005, when I was in terrible health, this consultant did not make note in my records of any of the side-effects of Lantus that I was suffering. I also told her my BS varied daily between 2-15, sometimes higher, she said that was ok! She actually wrote "good glycaemic control" in my notes :evil: I'm bloody livid, and I intend to write a letter of complaint to the hospital and demand an explanation from this woman. She did not help me, and had it not been for me changing to pork insulin, my own decision, I'd be facing complications. It's downright negligence, and I will make sure she does not get away with it.

Some medical staff treat people with diabetes like idiots. I recently moved to a different part of the country and the new consultant I saw felt it necessary to explain to me in words of one syllable how diabetes worked and how to keep good control of my blood sugars. If I had been a newly diagnosed nine year old I may have found his approach helpful. As I am 43 years old and have been diabetic for over 30 years I found his attitude patronising to say the least! The other thing that drives me mad is when, if you have something else wrong with you, doctors always say "oh, that'll be because of your diabetes" as if that absolves them from any further need to actually listen to want you're saying.

I think I'll stop now as all this righteous indignation will stop me getting to sleep!

Yes,the that'll be your diabetes is a phrase I get too grr..

Sorry to hear you have so many problems, I on the other hand have never seen a consultant, only my GP. I am very lucky since he is very good and has specialised in diabetes. He recommended carb restricting and when initially I went low carb, was unofficially chuffed and told me to carry on. But then I found out that there are only a fraction of people who ever reach hba1c of under 7-7.5%, which means glycaemic control of that level would be considered good.

Many times the pros can be/seem uncaring, non supportive and even rude in any area of medicine. Some are those things but some have lost all hope and faith in their patients when they see the same progressive disease day in, day out. Same symptoms and complications on people who have not managed or wanted to make lifestyle changes required.

There is a small shift, which I'm sure will carry on, regarding the diet choice for us diabetics. The results of restricted carb intake talk for themselves and awareness is rising. The problem is, like my GP's, that pros cannot officially endorse low carbing because of government guidelines. Being struck off would be disastrous for most. And also all these kind of changes will take such a long time to happen. I have moved recently and am now looking for a new GP. I'll keep an open mind but am convinced will not find as good as one as before. But then, I'm getting my prescriptions from there, support and information are coming from elsewhere. Call me cynical but I am very unlikely to put my full faith in pros. Low expectations, low disappointments... :wink:

Wait till you get to my age! Now at 75 and using a walking stick due to very bad back, I was going to my car when the postman went by and started up a conversation shouting at me. At first I thought he was talking to somebody else then realised that as I had a walking stick he most probably thought I was deaf as well!!!
As regards docs, having just been because of a bad sore on my leg,he proceeded to say "Just leave it to dry out" and continued rambling on and I had to shout over the top of him to get him to listen to what I had to say.
Talk about all the "isms" there are today, not enough said about old ageism.
