attended the clinic yesteday and asked about a meter..NO NO NO..I was told type 2 diabetics did not need one..I was also told in no uncertain terms that I would NOT get a prescription for the strips We have no support group where I live ..
So looks like I just blunder on.

I have always used Accu-chek meters and found them very good when issuing meters and consumables without question, try ringing them and ask for a meter to be sent out, the mark-up for them is on the test strips so they should give you a meter free of charge, here is their contact details:

Sorry to read this , I`m in exactly the same situation . I`m on diet only and have been congratulated by the relevent medics for keeping D under control , but none of them has done anything to help me at all . I got a couple of meters FOC but have to buy the strips , it makes me very angry indeed . I sometimes see people queing up for their heroin substitutes at the in house pharmacy at the surgery and yes , I applaud them for trying to do something about their addiction, it must be very hard and I am not without sympathy, but why cant we get test strips for something thats happened to us which is beyond our control ?

There are some blood glucose meters that are exclusive to Scotland I believe and the test strips for them are fairly cheap compared to the well known brands.

On Call supply strips for less than £10 for 50 (the price might have changed) so it is worth looking at other meters.
 
I think I would ask my surgery to write to me explaining exactly why I can't have a meter. Depending on what was said in the letter, I would then take this further with the surgery manager, the PCT, my MP, etc working my way up. There is, somewhere on the forum I think, an explanation of exactly why we need meters and strips quoting various legaleze. Don't get mad, get organised and pushy!
 
Getting a meter isn't the issue - I've had to buy all the meters I've owned in 15 years with type 1 diabetes. First one in 1996 was £35 - a lot of money, especially as I didn't have a job then. Getting strips prescribed is the issue for many people with type 2 diabetes.
 
Exactly what jaykay said. I'd hit the surgery as hard as possible. You should absolutely be able to get a meter, and a monthly prescription for 50 test strips.

Make sure you get it in writing exactly WHY you are being refused this essential medical equipment, then take steps to making it known at the highest level that you are being refused.

I live on a tiny Island in the Hebrides..I wont get it I cant make too many waves here,,too small a place AND I said I was on this forum I was really poo-pooed...Trust me..I envy you folks who live in big places where you are a number ..In one way
I love my Island and my friends and usually the medical care is top notch...Nurse said that as I was only type 2 there was no need for meters etc..that I was getting best of care :? My Doc agrees with her. My chemist can sell me a meter..BUT the strips are out of my price range :cry:
The good news is..I have lost 4 lbs ( I am not too overweight)..my BP is perfect..my eys and feet are good..The rest of me is ******** :lol: :lol:
I have tried to start a support group here but, APATHY is alive and well...nobody wants to know

I was refused a meter when I was (mis)diagnosed with Type2 Got really ill within a year, but was still refused a meter. Bought my own and tested 26. Rang the surgery and asked if I should go to A&E immediately. They said, ' No! Drink loads of water and come in here now'. Wrote me a prescription there and then for my testing strips, took more blood tests than you could write about and referred me to the consultant. The point is, they guess at type2 and treat you accordingly i.e. like you don't deserve proper treatment. It's an absolute disgrace. Buy your own, keep a diary and take them the evidence. They will back down if your BGs are going high and they think you might formally complain about your treatment. Try speaking to your PAL team.
