Hi Steve,
Welcome to the site. I know exactly how you feel. I think everyone on this site has, at some point, felt exactly the same. It's so confusing, not knowing what you can eat, what you can't eat: one day you read one thing, then the next day you read something totally different and end up feeling really low and despondent. But have no fear - Diabetes.co.uk is here!
This site has helped me tremendously, and I'm sure it will help you too.
I too suggest that you have a look at the low carb forum. I know that after I'd spent 2 or 3 days reading it, it started to make sense to me, and lifted a lot of weight off my shoulders, and removed a lot of the confusion. I've only been low carbing for a week, but I'm definitely going to give it a fair try, as I was diagnosed T2 a year ago, and couldn't understand why I just couldn't seem to get my triglycerides down. No-one has ever mentioned to me that carbs raise trigs.
A good site to have a look at is
http://www.bloodsugar101.com/ I found it very informative (in a diabetes for dummies kind of way  ) including subjects like "You did NOT eat your way to diabetes!" It made me feel much better about myself
Whatever your questions, however simple and stupid you may think they sound, we've all asked them at some point! So ask away - there will somebody who can answer you
