Ill for 5 weeks

Apologies if I should have posted this elsewhere. I was sick with an upper airway infection (trachea/windpipe) for four weeks, had two sets of antibiotics and it was more or less clearing by the beginning of this week.
On Monday, I had a sore throat which I though may be down to all the coughing I had with the infection but realised quite rapidly that it nothing to do with that, sure enough within a few hours I was aching and shivering. I have spent the last few days fighting off a temperature, drinking plenty taking paracetamol etc. I have even had to take to my bed which is practically unheard of for me because the pains in my arms and legs were so bad.

I have tested Bg's a few times, still in 6's and low 7's even though I have hardly eaten anything.

I am on other meds and although I do get depression, I try and work my way through it. This has really knocked me for 6, I don't want to sound like a whinger but I feel so ill and am very very tired of feeling this way. My immune system isn't the best because of the corticosteroids I take for my asthma when I'm ill but I don't normally get two infections one after another with no break in between. I'm sitting here covered in sweat (sorry tmi) and am at a loss as to what to do, I'm sure it's infection is viral based so anti-b's wouldn't help.

I try not to be needy but could sure do with some help on this, advice or anything. Has anybody else been hit like this? I know it's mean but if there are others going through the same thing it is reassuring that I haven't screwed up my health..I have a tendency to blame myself for everything that goes wrong and get peed off if I get ill.

Hi LB,

No wonder your feeling low you are very poorly, which in itself will make you feel down. Saying that you have screwed up your health is not right, it just sounds as though you have been very, very unlucky. I can understand your frustration especially if you are the type who would normaly just get on with it and with it not being something that would respond to antibiotics. Neither are you needy you just need someone to tell you that you are simply unwell. Give yourself and your body a break and rest.

I do empathise as I have only had 2 chest infections whilst diabetic and in the past ( never had a chest infection previously ) I would just battle on through. The first time it happened I meant to make an appointment with my GP but my little lad ended up in hospital with bad croup. I left it and when I finally phoned the DRs I then phoned to cancel as I was starting to cough it up and therefore started to feel better. The DR phoned me at home asked me some questions and said that he was leaving a precsription for me, and that I needed it so that it didnt interfere with my BG control. This was the first time i realised that I had to accept that its not always good to just battle on!

Hope you give yourself time to get better. However if it does continue dont be put off going back to the Drs.

Can't really be of any help bit just to say I am sending you lots of 'get we'll vibes & to say I think I know a bit how you feel.
When my asthma was really badly uncontrolled (before I was on steroids!) I can remember having flu & then being SO bad with my asthma that I was in bed for over a month. I had coughed so much that I was incontinent (definitely TMI!!) I live on my own so hadn't seem anyone or been out to a shop, I couldn't sleep so the time was going so slowly. I just couldn't cope & totally reached the end of my tether- Im ashamed to say I rang an ambulance in my despair & begged them to take me to hospital - but by this time my observations were ok & they wouldn't!!- after they'd gone I just sobbed & sobbed!!
I really really hope you start to pick up very soon. You have every reason to feel sorry for yourself & moan - just hope it helps a little- all the best.

Poor you Ladybird. I was reading earlier about the effects of glandular fever on the immune system and your story just made me think of it again. of course its not your fault.
Sounds very flu-like . No wonder you feel so ill and so depressed about it. i hope you can get some help soon to make you feel better, and that this attack is short-lived.
You are certainly not a whinger. Anyone would feel down in your situation- just getting over one thing and hit by another.
i do hope you feel much better very soon.

My daughter sufers from one thing after another as you do but in her case it is caused by stress. The she is prescribed too many antibiotics and her immune systenm is compromised and it becomes a vicious circle.
Sounds as though you do need the dr this time. Hope he'?she can helpWe will alll be hinking of you.
 
I agree with the others, anyone would be feeling miserable after being ill for so long. Please don't beat yourself up about it, ok?

I hope you're arranging to see the doctor. Sounds like some standard blood tests could be a good idea (eg checking your white cell count, CRP (inflammatory markers) and a bunch of other things I don't know much about).

I usually get some degree of post-infection fatigue with even the common cold. If you don't have an infection, you could well still have fatigue and body ache symptoms for a while afterwards.

Hope things start improving real soon for you.

I'm taking myself to docs tomorrow morning as I have had enough of this now, had something that resembled a migraine last night and although much improved today, if I move quickly or bend down to pick up something, I could cry with the pain in the top of my head. Normally I wouldn't go but I'm listening to you and will put my backside into gear.
While there will also ask about the absent Hba1c that has not been done for months and the BP check which hasn't been done for just as long, if not more.

Back soon to annoy and irritate all and sundry :wink: :angel:

PS. Grandbabies guzzling well and gaining weight x
 
We have had something similar to the infection you have. Yes it did linger and I took a course of antibiotics, but still spent three weeks feeling awful. Just when I though I was getting over it I developed a migraine and 3 weeks later I am still having them.

The only thing you can do is rest and relax - hard I know and this comes from someone who was told to go to bed for a week by their GP ! I am due to have a lumbar puncture on Friday and I have been told this will help the headache - this is an on going problem and the LP is to check the pressure in my spine and hopefully, give the neurologist some answers.

There's a lot of bugs about and if you are feeling low you become more susceptible to them. Big hugs, you are not alone.

Quick update, just in case anyone else is having the same problem.

Doc has said it is Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome (fancy names :roll: ). Not usually diagnosed so early on but because of low immunity and the infection and virus straight after each other with no break, plus the migraines, that's what it is.
Can work through it slowly now, managed to walk to docs today, exhausting but nice in the spring sunshine.

Sue, will be thinking of you when you have the LP done. I know it's not a pleasant procedure but is over relatively quickly so help it helps to give an answer to what is causing the migraines. Let us know how you get on. x

my son had PVFS last year,he's a healthy 25 yr old. Knocked him for 6.

Take it easy and let your body recover in it's own time.

Hi Ladybird.

Lumbar puncture wasn't as bad as I expected and we have a result. Raised pressure which is causing the migraines. It's treatable and I will see the consultant in a few weeks time. Now it's back to bed.
