Hi Tom,

I'll bump your post up on the hope that a Type1 will answer.

Hi, I'm type one and a gym instructor and exercise a lot therefore eat little and often to keep my levels up for my activity. What aspect about it would you like help with?

You don't need to use shakes provided you get adequate protein, chicken and eggs (especially egg whites) are good sources of protein. You should also include things like grass fed beef or lamb to your diet as these are a good source of carnitine which helps build and use the amino acids from protein jnto muscle. You can buy l-carnitine as a supplement but its expensive and lean steak is just as good and more palatable. Try and eat some protein within 1/2 hour of finishing a workout as thats when its most effective.

If you find getting enough protein a problem (i struggle to eat that much protein so I do use them) then you can use whey shakes, but they are very expensive. Promax is Ok and mid priced and available online at a discount, the best is LA Muscle LA Whey, very expensive but if you keep an eye on the LA Muscle website it does get heavily discounted from time to time.

To build muscle you need to stress it by lifting heavy, and make sure you allow proper recovery time between sessions. A simple free program for building muscle strength using free weights instead of isolation machines is stronglifts 5x5, seems to work quite well. There is a bit of hardsell to join the paysite, but it really isn't necessary. Its all compound moves so you are working many muscles simultaneously, so the average workout takes less than 40 mins.

Thank you for the message back and I will take that all in mind but I need to put on Wight first see me being type 1 last year I lost 3 stone without taking my injections propel but now I'm back on track I'm looking to go gym and get as fit as I can so hopefully all you have told me so far will help thanks

Well the important thing there is to eat more than you burn in a day, provided you do the weight training you could eat maybe 3000 cals a day and put on muscle instead of fat.

If you do use protein shakes, be sure to look at the carbohydrate content-some of them are high in carbs such as the chocolate flavour ones therefore you may need to inject like one or two units with it. And weight training can make your sugar levels higher so if you have a high carbohydrate protein shake right after, it could make your sugar levels really high. 'Myprotein' amino acid powder are low in carbohydrates especially if you get the unflavoured or vanilla one. But like thommothebear said, you can get the same protein from a tasty steak!

I was wondering the same thing lol I've noticed now I lost weight and a type 1 that my vascular system is much stronger or should I say my veins are bigger in my arms it seems to help pump them up and I noticed a greater increase in muscle but not so much strength

More muscle does not necessarily in itself lead to more strength. The only way to get stronger is to lift heavier.
