injecting in a public place

Never had a problem been asked what I was doing when said diabetic was fine.

To the person who was type 2 above that said injecting lantus morning & evening I find that very hard to believe as it acts for 24 hours.

I'm on lantus & inject once a day everyone does on lantus. Levermire is diff I think

Spiritus, if colleagues are looking disgusted you shouldn't give them a second thought in my opinion. Right thinking people, even if they would prefer not to see someone injecting, would simply look away and not deliberately make you feel uncomfortable and upset. It is more than likely the main reason they do it - just a pathetic power play. They probably habe a catologue of ways to do this on anyone. I cannot imagine how any decent human being who is not needle phobic thinks they have the right make any kind of issue about the administering of medicine. Actually, even those with a phobia would can be polite and understanding of our condition while pointing out their own. Its about consideration and respect. Some people lack these qualities but if we expect them in other areas of our lives then we should expect them when injecting in public. I am horrified at the number of stories, some quite extreme, that so many of you have. Welcome to the dark ages! We can all keep our heads up and stand tall. There are enough things to worry about with diabetes without allowing small minded drama queens onto the list.

I can't believe these people would be so negative towards type 1s injecting.
Are they so naive?
If it was me and they frowned, I would tell them its liquid Viagra and they better keep a safe distance as anything might happen.:lol:
 
Split doseing is quite common place mate. I did it with lantus(lasted about 20hrs) and now Levimer(about 16hrs)

Not true at all! NOT everyone on Lantus injects it only once a day. I'm considering changing to doing it twice a day at the moment - it can lead to better control!


EDIT: Ooops, Andy beat me to it, I missed that. Sorry! :roll:

Ah, so if that's how you do it that's how everyone must do it?

Please can I suggest tolerance and respect for other board members and their way of managing their diabetes?

On the original topic. When I'm eating out I don't inject until the food is in front of me so I generally wear trousers or skirt and a top, and just discretely inject into my stomach between the two. I've never had anyone give me a funny look (well, not that I've noticed) or say anything. If other people do notice and feel awkward, well, that's their problem not mine.
 


Erm please be careful when quoting people on here.... I DID NOT say that!! I was quoting someone else in the thread and picking them up on the fact that lots of people split their dose!!

So maybe check you've quoted the right person before you post next time?!
 
I've had problems with a woman asking "Do you have to do that while I'm eating?" Whilst I've been in a restaurant, my response to this was.... Directed at woman's husband, 'did you have to bring such a rude and intolerant woman out to dinner with you?'
The woman then said she was offended by me doing my insulin. Quite frankly I was offended and appalled that people could be so rude about a fact of MY life that they clearly have little or no knowledge of.

Sorry rant over!

Hi, everytime I go out for a meal which isn't often these days as I find it all so awkward I promise myself this will be the time I will NOT go to the ladies to do my testing and injecting, but I have not mastered it yet and slink off to the toilets resentful and angry. I have been Type 1 for nearly two years and don't want to be always "hiding" away and turning down friends' invites to go out to eat. May I just ask how do you go about testing the 2 units of insulin to see if the needle is going to work while you are sat at the table? Where do you squirt the insulin? How do you condition yourself to take that first step to do the injection in public?
 

Try not to think of your self as doing something wrong because there is nothing to be ashamed of .if people have a problem who cares its there problem not yours .you don't have to constantly be checking if the needle is working with 2units just squirt some out on the floor or into your cap on the pen and inject in plain sight of everyone.
if you act normal people won't even notice I guarantee it and if people do ask then inform them of what it is and then that's that finished with .
People are generally rely nice and its a great conversation starter

I've never been stopped, but as I find the pens heavy, I use syringes and I feel very awkward about doing it publicly, I think there is six a junkie stigma. but have managed to learn how to do it quite discreetly. Although that only really works when I'm siting down. I've recently changed jobs and have to leave earlier, so have to eat breakfast on my way to work. This is a bit trickier, I can opt for doing it on public transport or walking along a road!
 


I inject 65 units of Lantus before breakfast and again before supper I also inject 45 - 50 units novorapid via pen. I also know of at least 3 others who injet Lantus 3 times a day at Breakfast, dinner and suppertime (all 3 from different areas oh UK).
 
Wow 130 units of lantus a day, I only inject 26 units. With the life of the insulin being almost 24 hours thought people only injected it once a day as there must be a cross over period where both injections are working in the body. Thought it would be hard to find out which one might cause hypos

I was on 80u of Lantus until recently. (Now on 56.) It's not just CHO intake that affects it though - T1s can get insulin resistance like T2s do so they need much higher levels of insulin to do the same job.
 

I only inject 16units of lantus a day
Lantus is tricky because it can work for 24hours but often falls short, resulting in high sugars around 22 hours after taking it
I inject about 9times a day but only ever take about 2-3 units at a time

Its one of those" If one way does not work than try this way" cases . Yup can cause hypo's which means finding the best time to eat extra carbs to balance it out. Lantus is not a 24hr insulin for everybody (Im very Insulin sensitive and Lantus only lasts 20hrs with me) Its defionately one of those "we're all different" situations.
 
I use a minimum of 100 units of Insulatard & 90 units of HumulinS a day and eat very few carbs. Everyone is different, I am extremely insulin resistant not crazy.

i am t2 on novamix 30, i am insulin resistant, i started on a few units of insulin twice a day now im on 60units twice a day and i have still not managed to get my blood sugars normal
