Injury and BG levels

Yesterday my first two readings were 5.5 before breakfast and 5.6 2 hours later. Then I crushed my left hand badly in a home accident. By the time I got home from the surgery a further 2 hours had passed without anything to eat. When I took my next reading it was 7.2. Can injury trauma raise BG levels?

I'm pretty sure that it can! Stress will probably do it as well.

I ended up in A&E a couple of weeks ago with chest pain, and my BG had gone from 6.1 on waking to 11.3 when I got tested on admission. I'd only had 30g or Lizi's granola with yoghurt for breakfast and that would normally put my BG at around 8.0

Also, while in hospital I spoke to another chap who was diabetic who told me that any kind of injury put his BG levels up significantly.

I'm not sure of the mechanism - but maybe it's the body releasing stored glucose to give you energy to deal with the trauma?

Possibly it's part of the 'fight or flight response'. I imagine that it would be useful in non diabetics to have a sudden release of glucose to help them deal with emergency type situations. Not always helpful for us though! Personally I find that all accidents give me an adrenaline rush and a hypo. Not helpful when you're in the middle of nowhere and trying to explain where to send the ambulance!
