I went onto Lantus Insulin (14 units) taken at 7am each day about 8 months ago as I was not managing with diet control and metformin. I now have experienced lows with readings down to 3.4 particularly after exercising...golf or cycling. Before I go to play golf I have muesli and a slice of toast with marmalade. I then have a bounty bar and a banana during my golf and can still experience a low at the end of my golf..about 3 hours. I seem to have to eat more than I would like and it appears as though I am feeding the insulin. I have played sport all my life and have never been overweight. I developed type 2 at the age of 61. Would I be better to simply eat sugary items(jelly babies) during my exercise rather than getting the fat content of a bounty bar and a banana?
Do you take any rapid acting insulin? I halve my breakfast dose of Novorapid if I'm exercising first thing in the morning. Normally I test my blood when I wake - if I'm on the low side, I'll eat half a banana, if ok/high, I exercise before breakfast. When I've exercised, I test again and have breakfast - if still low, I tend to have more carbs. Might be you need to do the same?
