Insulin and Type 2

Hi all,

I have just been to see a consultant at hospital regarding nerve damage in my spine. He asked what medication iam on and was surprised when i told him that apart from meds i also use insulin and questioned as to wether i am actually type1! Surely there must be others out there like me, i have definately been diagnosed type 2.
 
I would get your GP to run a few more tests. I was diagnosed Type 2 as well, but now I am Type 1.5 Lada. There are hundreds of people like you in the forum. You are certainly not alone.

Thank you Every cloud, I only ever thought there was Type1 and Type 2. I was diagnosed 8 years ago and have regular check ups because i also have CKD. It's just that the consultant seemed to imply that only type 1's only need insulin - guess it wasn't his field!
 
I see, no that's not true, Type 2s can need insulin too. It is all very complicated. Lol. I had no clue about any of it until I was diagnosed. I wouldn't worry too much about it, like you said, it probably wasn't his area. But it is definitely a question for your next doctor appointment. Others will probably be commenting soon who will know a lot more than me.

You can ask for a C-peptide test to be done.
 
Hi Noblehead, never heard of this - is it a blood test?
 
I rapidly developed diabetes after being put on meds that affected my pancreas. Just before diagnosis I had a prolonged chest infection and wondered if I am type 1.5 instead of 2. Too coincidental for me.
 
I had to go on insulin in hospital after having steroids and other drugs. Diabetes was only picked up at my second stay. This surprised everyone as they had tested for it before. However I think I could have been a 'bit' diabetic for a while, but did not realize. So now T2 on insulin but alive thanks to steroids and a cocktail from the hospital pharmacy. And some very clever people. Will I come of insulin ? It's a wait and find out the hard way answer I'm afraid.

Glad to talk to a fellow Simpsons fan! Down here in Australia, people like us are referred to as "Insulin assisted" Diabetics as opposed to "Insulin dependent" (T1) Diabetics....When oral meds doesn't or stops working docs prescribe a combination of tablets and/or injection regime. The downside is the jabs can make some people to put on weight.........unless they do some serious workouts in the gym as I found out (through this forum) insulin is also a growth hormone which some bodybuilders use....For me, I'm just starting my workout routine, hence my avatar (less the doughnuts)
 
Guess im lucky (so far), been on insulin since 2007 and have managed to stay at 13 stone through healthy eating. I used to go to the gym every lunchtime but had to stop because of the nerve damage i have aquired.
