Insulin dosage and absorption

Hi everyone,

I have been a type 1 for three years and was on lantus and humalog. Recently switched to novo rapid

I am facing a weird problem and this has been for like a week or so now. My random or fasting ( whaterver the case) would be perfectly normal and within limits. I take insulin based on what i am going to eat and sometimes my Levels are blood sugar levels are quite high like he insulin didn't do any good.

Then i eat something take a corrective dise and it comes down to normal. I have teied taking the same level of insulin that i take for exactly the same amount of food that i eat but sometimes it just shoots up like i didn't take insulin in the very first place.

This forced me to switch from humalog to novorapid. But the results are the same. Tried rotating mu injection site but no result.

Can someone please help me out as this is really freaking me out.....

Yes i take insulin like 10 min before i eat. And i check like 2 hours after eating

Work on your bolus timings, I inject 20mins ahead but some people have to inject 30/40mins ahead to reduce the postprandial spike.

Just one more thing, see if i take insulin like 10 min before my meal. That would result in a spike in my blood sugar level but wont that bring my blood sugar down as insulin having kicked in later will stay in the system for longer hence off setting the increase by itself ?
 
It sounds like injecting only 10 minutes before you eat means you are digesting the food and getting the spike before your insulin starts working. If your insulin starts working when you are at your highest, it will take longer to work because one you are high it's a much harder job.

Have a good read of the article that I posted, it really is worth reading and should address any issues that you may have around bolus timings.
 
Sorry if i wasn't clear about it.

See lets say i took my insulin shot right at the time of the meal.

Now that would mean that my bolus would kick in, in like 20min and by that time i would be done with my meal.

As i am done with my meal and my bolus hasn't kicked that would mean that i would be running a high but once the bolus kicks in wouldn't it bring down my blood sugar as i have taken the bolus for the same meal ?

To sum it up, my question is that my immediate post meal may be high, but wouldn't it be back to normal in like 2 hours time i.e. by the time my bolus runs out.

It may come down but it may take longer than 2 hours.

As a side note some of us find if we spike too high we become insulin resistant and it takes more insulin to bring our levels back down, I think if you can avoid spiking too high in the first place (by getting the bolus timing right) you can avoid this happening.

Maybe try experimenting with bolus timing, but just be mindful what the meal contains, meals that are high in fat take longer to absorb so bolusing too far ahead may result in a postprandial hypo, it's trial & error I'm afraid.
