Insulin lumps

Hi everyone, I was curious - does anyone get insulin lumps from when they self-inject their insulin? If so does anyone know what caused the insulin lumps?

And is the pump more efficient ?
 
Lumps under the skin can be caused by injecting insulin. Medical term lymphoma (i think) the insilin causes the fat cells to increase in size. Once cause is not rising the injection site enough. Don't think having the pump would help as you stol have to rotate the cannula every 2~3 days using different areas. If you can avoid injections in any lumpy areas.

Hi becky .

Are you using levemir insulin ?

Levemir can produce 'lipos' [short for the medical term brett explains in the post above]
It is mentioned clearly on the manufactuers leaflet in the box of levemir.
It can be an initial reaction to the preservatives used in this insulin .
Inflammed red raised red lumps on site location injection areas .
They can spread in size and will feel quite lumpy and tender .

Normally it can/should settle down after about 3 weeks of new usage - if 'not' .
Best to return to see your DSN or consultant .

I had this with levemir - all is clearly explained in the leaflet .
This is if you are using levemir .

I have the pump and was a bit worried about this. Because, the cannula is pumping 3 days worth of insulin in the same place :0 will keep an eye on things though.

Hi

I have over used the top of my right let and it's now full of lumps and scar tissue. I was told that long acting insulin can cause this along with non rotation of injection sites. When I was diagnosed as a child I favoured one spot and this gas caused the problem. I now rotate sites and hope once on the pump the long acting lumps will go.

If you do have a lumpy area, make sure it isn't knocked or if you have a massage, take care as the build up of insulin can sometimes cause sudden drops in blood sugar.

Thanks everyone. No I am not on the levetir insulin I am in the lantus long lasting and novorapid insulin.
And I don't have a DSN or diabetes consultant I now see my gp as they were truly horrible - made my diabetes worse- accused and full on yelled at me for being in intensive care when it had Nothing to so with me

I take both Lantus and Novorapid and sometimes get a lump when doing my lantus , I had a few when first injecting novorapid but those days seem to have gone. The only reason I think I seem to get it with my lantus is where I inject - I inject into my `bum` and I'mpretty sure the needle doesn't always go all the way in.

As for going under your GP - I did the same , He's a brilliant DR and specialist in Diabetes care - the only problem I'm finding atm is having to get fed back to the consultant at the hospital in hope for a pump.

I have a high keloid content in my skin, which tends to result in more-excessive scarring and healing; I find that my body will often (though not always) react to the nylon cannulas after 2 days - especially during hot weather. (Currently, I'm using the Animas Vibe and two types of cannula.)

Your post jogged my memory, Brett, so thank you! :thumbup: ...I've just enquired and am being sent a box of steel cannula by Animas, so I'll see how I get on with those instead.
 
Still have some visible lumps under my belly button from when I first started injecting insulin using glass syringes and needles like floor nails, the key to avoid the lumps as everyone has said is site rotation.
