Interesting chat with pharmacist!

Whilst waiting in the pharmacy today (they had problems tracking down part of my presciption), I took the opportunity to chat to the friendly young pharmacist, as there were no other customers waiting. I asked him if he could suggest any ways I might persuade my doctor(right next door to the pharmacy) to let me have more than 100 test strips at a time. As it takes my surgery about 4 days to clear any prescription requests, it means I'm currently having to trot down to the docs. every 16 days or so. His reply astonished me. He told me all docs. have been told to cut back on presriptions for test strips, even for Type 1's. How utterly ridiculous!
Interestingly,he then went on to say he himself was a diabetic, on insulin.(He actually lives in London, so will be under a different health-care team to me). He was only a young lad and said he was diagnosed as Type 2 when he was 24. He was really slim too. I asked him if he was sure he was Type 2 and he said most of his family were and that as well as insulin he was on Metformin and Gliclazide. I asked him if he'd had a c-peptide test done and he said no but he'd had a blood test that showed he had anti-bodies. He also said he only ever got prescribed about 50 strips at a time but they lasted him ABOUT A YEAR!!! He admitted to me he hardly ever tested himself as he felt he didn't need to.
I'm amazed that a pharmacist would be so indifferent about his BG readings but am confused about his Type if a blood test showed he had anti-bodies. I would have put money on him being Type 1.
Thoughts anyone, please?

Hi,
Not sure of the timeline as far as his diagnosis and the test which showed the antibodies goes, but if it was quite soon after his diagnosis, perhaps if he was a Type1 still 'honeymooning' and therefore still producing some insulin, he might still have been producing antibodies too?? He might not be anymore?

Not really sure of my science here!

Not good news about the test strips though, is it?

hi chocoholic

my doctors takes 2 working days for the prescription to be sent to pharmacist and ready to be picked up. Luckily I can order repeat prescription online and so far I've got a bit of a stock pile. Each box has 2 tubs of 50 strips each and I have 5 boxes. I do test my bg at least 4 times a day and normally between 6 and 10. If my bg is high i test each hour and give a correction bolus until it is within normal range, I have to do this being on a insulin pump

can your doctors do online repeat prescriptions?

I don't think so, Slinger. Trouble is, to do repeat prescriptions is tricky because sometimes I'll need to re-order one insulin, sometimes another, sometimes needles or whatever and they all seem to be needed on a differing rotation basis.
It would just be so simple if only the doc. would let me collect 200 strips at a time instead of 100. I don't think my surgery like 'simple' ways though.

Does your doctor allow you to request some, but not all, of your repeats at one time?

When I request a repeat prescription, I just request what I need, not everything. We're not online at my GP's surgery yet, but that's how it works now. Ironically, f I did have to get everything at once I'd end up with zillions of test strips because most of my pills and potions are 2 months worth, but I don't use 100 test strips in a couple of months.
