I have shown micro albuminuria a number of times over the years and have discussed it with various professionals. However your consultant/DSN/dietician should be your main advisors. Anyway these are the points I have picked up:-
i) Your diabetes must be well controlled. Typically an HbA1c of 7.0 or below achieved without wild fluctuations in BG should be the aim. Your team should be setting the target.
ii) Well controlled BP is very important. My team’s target is 125/75 but again this is something to be discussed with your consultant/GP.
iii) If you are/put on (to) BP medication ACE inhibitors (end in ..april) also seem to beneficial is avoiding kidney damage. Sometimes low dose are prescribed even if BP is in the acceptable range
iv) Reduce salt intake.
v) Cholesterol has never been mentioned but a figure of 4.0 or below should be the aim
vi) Drink plenty of fluids – water is best! Limit alcohol and never over guidelines
vii) Avoid overdoing protein intake. Normal portions should be OK unless otherwise advised but huge steaks, 8oz burgers, etc. are best avoided. Typical daily intake should be around 8 oz per day for the average person. There is some suggestion that poultry (chicken, turkey, etc.) is better than red meat - these are also lower in fat.
I am not a medical professional and you really need to discuss these things with your team. A low protein diet should only be undertaken under the advice of a kidney specialist as it can be unhealthy in other ways.
