Itchy Tongue after Atkins Bars?

I don't rely on Atkins bars on a daily basis, but I do like them and will use them if I need to grab breakfast on the go, or to have on a long car or train journey for a quick snack or even if I'm going to be out and about in town and meal options will be dubious (I usually keep one or two in my handbag and my chorus bag just in case). Generally speaking, I like the bars, and so I buy them in bulk from AvidLite to save a little. On my recent big purchase, I noticed they had Cappuccino Nut flavoured bars in a 15 pack, so I got them.

Eating a Cappuccino Nut bar always makes the right side of my tongue itch and my lips tingle a bit. I am not allergic to any type of nut (though my mom is allergic to Walnuts so I avoid them on principle). My allergies include Maple, Oak, and Sycamore trees and their by products (so no maple syrup or oak smoked meats), Goldenrod, Rape seed (just the flower), Onions, Garlic, Shallots, and Leeks.

Ingredients on the package are as follows: soy protein, peanuts, sweetners (sorbitol, maltitol, sucralose), almonds, soy granules, wheat starch, humectant, cocoa butter, milk powder, palm fat, hazlenuts, salt.

As far as I can tell, nothing should trigger my allergies, so does anyone have any thoughts?

Also, anyone want to take however many of these I have left off me? I can't return them since I took them out of their box to put them in a basket, and I think they are all dated July 2012. I probably have at least 10, if not more of this flavour! I don't want to throw them out as they are a little pricey!

I like Atkins products and use the shakes daily. I have never tried the bars, as they are not allowed on the ND. I would be happy to buy the bars from you, but as they contain wheat starch I won't as I don't eat any wheat products. I am very paranoid of all I eat, and have cut out all grains from my diet. I'm sure someone will be happy to take them though, as Atkins products are very well regarded.

It does sound like an allergy to one or more of the ingredients, if this only happens with the Cappuccino variety leave well alone and stick with the ones that don't cause a reaction.

I think that's why she is giving them away.

I don't blame you. I keep my wheat intake to a minimum, but haven't completely cut it out.

Yeah, just wish I knew which ingredient so I can avoid it in other products....I vaguely remember having an issue with body butter from the Body Shop making me itch, so maybe it's the Cocoa Butter? I plan on ditching them....just would rather they go to someone who will eat them instead of the bin!

dropped you a pm.

Make a note of the ingredients and keep them so if this ever happens again you can compare. I'm like you that I'd rather give something away than bin them.

Allergies to Oak & Sycamore have high levels of cross reactivity to tree nuts- especially hazelnut & to a lesser extent almonds. It is quite common to react to other things in the same 'cross- reactivity family' & it does tend to get worse if you continue to have them. If you read up about Oral Allergy Syndrome & cross - reactivity.

I'm fine with their Hazlenut bars (but interestingly enough, now that you mention this....the hazlenuts fresh off my neighbour's bush made me have an itchy mouth) and their Cranberry Almond bars though, but this is interesting to keep an eye on! I know my onion allergy started out as just onions and then spread itself to include leeks, spring onion, and even chives!
