Just a pretend diabetic

You are just a pretend diabetic was what I was told by non diabetic friends as I was not on medication, I was diet controlled (for 5 years) Just because the Dr had not put me onto tablets did not mean I was not a diabetic! It really annoys me that some people do not take diabetis seriously. Their son in law has diabetis and has lots of health problems. We would be invited for a meal and they would produce a wonderful pudding full of sugar!
Why do some people not take diabetics seriously?

No idea, actually I have the same problem from my mum, my sister and one of my daughters. Sister and daughter are both nurses, you work that one out!!!!
 
My Dad died at 69 from diabetic complications and my brother at 61- both of them ignored they symptoms and stuck their heads in the sand, idiots! I class myself as lucky, I went to the Dr with menopause symptoms (which stopped and it wasn´t!) but was diagnosed with IGT so I knew for about 8 years I was close to being diabetic. I am lucky, I found out right at the start, so hopefully I can live a lotlonger than dad and brother!! I do have the start of cataracts though, which is a pain, cos sewing is hard now!

That would really hurt me if I couldn't see. I wish you all the best, I sew and knit - its all I do so even more incentive to be a 'proper' diabetic.
 
People are often ignorant to things they don't know much about. Though it does get irritating and upsetting, it's a fact of life. Why not try and educate them a little on diabetes, tell them the difference between the types and the different ways they can be controlled?

Rather than let yourself get frustrated, you could make it a constructive experience for everyone
 
Some people have a need to appear to know more than everyone else. I suspect it's to cover up feelings of inadequacy.
They like to seem intelligent and are unlikely to be intelligent enough to see that they don't understand at all. They are also usually too stupid to accept anyone else's explanation. In some cases I've observed, they live in a mental "Soap opera world".
I don't mean you have to be stupid to watch soaps, but to believe they portray real life??

Diabetes is diabetes...... no matter what type it is or how it is treated. It's extremely hard for some people to comprehend how it is to live with a life-long condition until they live with it themselves, try to ignore any negative comments and just get on with living life!
 
Personally I think the meds is the easy bit (not talking about insulin wich is obviously increadibly difficult) but chucking a few pills down yer neck at the right time is not realy a problem . Saying no to foods u like and stayiing strict to which ever diet you choose while trying to keep up a exercise regieme is the increadibly difficult part yet has tp be juggled arround life . Either that or let yourself be prone to diabetic problems. Every diabetic strugles regardless of how well they controll it and some struggle more that others with less results. At times it must be very demoralising . Good luck to all
