Chocfish once mentioned Kefir on this site and I wanted to try some so bought some Kefir leaves in Tescos. However looking at the website mentioning Kefir don't think I've bought the right thing. Any ideas on what to do with Kefir leaves? (rude ones will not be adhered to unless they look fun!!!)

Hi Suzi,
I think what you have bought isn't kefir but kaffir. Kefir is not a plant - it is a bacteria and yeast combination that is used to make a nutritious milk/yogurt type drink. The Kaffir lime is a type of lime common to Thailand and Indonesia and kaffir leaves are commonly used as a spice in Thai cooking.

I believe you would need to go to a specialist health food shop to get a kefir starter-kit. If Chocfish is around hopefully she can point you in the right direction.

Hehehehe kefir leaves, errr no you need kefir grains, either milk kefir or water kefir
you can add your kefir leaves to your food though

If anyone here would like to make their own kefir, I have some very lively, healthy milk kefir grains to give away for free, I have already promised one lot to a member on here, but can give away another 5 lots (enough for a pint of milk), so get in touch, first come first served - I am happy to post them out end of next week when they are ready.

I have cats in the house, but honestly we are very clean people and over the years I have given many grains away and nobody ever has come to any harm, but if that puts you off for whatever reason you can purchase kefir grains from ebay or http://www.kefirshop.co.uk

Karen, can you use these with soya milk as I am dairy intolerant. If so I would love to take you up on your offer. What do you need to get these to me?

Suzil - search on google, type in 'lactose intolerance - kefir?' I think most people can drink kefir, or you just can try out water kefir instead.

Here is one link to tell you a bit more, but search a bit more and then make up your mind, the kefirshop has water kefir, I only have milk grains, if you wanted some then I would just slip some in the post, its not a problem.

Jem of course, can you please either email or PM your address or where you want me to post the grains to? I will send them out on Saturday by first class post.

Re: Kefir grains

Hi All, I just joined and was suprise to find discussions on Kefir grains because I have been looking to buy some for a while.
I was even more suprise to read that someone called Karen who happens to live in the same town as me was offering them. I have sent a request to Karen's email for the grains and hope she can oblige me.

Would it be possible for someone to let me have some their kefir grains (I wish to make yoghurt)? Obviously I would be happy to pay the postage. Many thanks! (I live in Hove).
