Apparently there are two sources of low carb breath - "keto" breath is caused by the ketones generated when you're burning fat, and is an acetone/fruity/pear drop "flavour", and the other (which I wasn't aware of) is, as you suggest, caused by too much protein, and causes a probably more offensive ammonia smell.
Actually I couldn't smell my keto breath - I don't have much sense of smell, but I could/can definitely taste it! Mine definitely went away, just when I was starting to believe it wouldn't!! I can't really remember now but it lasted around a month. It does occasionally come back for a day or two when my ketones have gone rather low. I just give my teeth an extra clean which helps with the taste side of things.
