ketones question

Daughter is rarely sick, so hence the probable obvious question!
Overnight she has developed a vomiting bug, younger sibling had it during the week.
Her morning reading is 11, which is high for her, usually 5-6.
Have tested her for ketones and I'm getting a reading of 3.6.
Diabetic clinic not answering, so asking here.
Do I need to do anything?
I have given her a .5 of Novorapid to bring her down a little, she is only to drink water, and she has a temp of 99f, but have given her calpol.
Hoping the nurse rings me back soon but in the meantime advice is appreciated, thanks
 
Sorry to hear your daughter is poorly.

When my daughter is ill and has ketones i find i need to give double the amount of insulin to correct high levels, i test and correct 2 hourly until everything is back to normal.

Hope you can get through to clinic
 
Hopefully by now the clinic have rang back and given you the advice you needed, don't forget next time you could ring NHS Direct who are available 24 hours.

Got in touch with the clinic, and they presumed that she had starvation ketones as opposed to diabetic ketones (never knew there were different ones)
So I proceeded to give her full sugar 7up and within 20 minutes she asked for an apple, so I had to give more nonorapid, she ate it and thankfully her ketones have dropped to 0.8.
Vomiting has stopped for the time being, so panic over!

yes, keep checking bg every 2/3 hours and giving fast acting insulin to bring her bg down. Try and get her to drink lots of water as this will help flush out the ketones and keep her hydrated. It might help her to stop feeling so sick as high bg levels can make you feel queezy
 
Hi there - glad your daughter is feeling better. Just for the benefit of anyone else reading this I thought I was post the (relatively new) NHS guidelines on treatment :

Glucose: More than 14 Ketones: 0 -1 Take correction dose
Glucose: More than 14 Ketones: 1-3 Take double correction dose and repeat hourly until ketones less than 1
Glucose: More than 14 Ketones: Over 3 Take double correction dose as above and seek medical advice

Measure glucose and ketone levels hourly
Drink plenty of sugar free fluids
Retest ketones every hour until less than 1.
