Hi there,
Hubby was diagnosed in January with Ketosis prone type 2 diabetes (Flatbush).
He was found on my return home from work very confused and I tested his urine to find ketones in the urine and glucose.
And ambulance was called and he was admitted to hospital for 9 days. Insulin was administered and he was sent home to be given insulin twice a day.
In May his reading were low enough to come off insulin and be on metformin only.
When going for his first check up since being in hospital they said he needed a different blood test called Fructosamine as he also has sickle cell trait.
Thank you there is always one more obstacle and now a different test. Hopefully he will remain off the insulin. I see that this type of diabetes can come back to being insulin dependant again. I hope not.
I wouldn't necessarily call it another obstacle, just a different way of achieving a more accurate test result. There is little point in relying on a test understood to be less accurate, based on his genetic make-up. Like the rest of us, he'll need to look after himself, and keep a close eye on his overall results.
