I am type 2 and insulin, i had a bleeding ulcer 4-5 weeks ago, i have Atrial Fibrillation and take Warfarin. I am on Lansoprazole and struggling to get my blood sugars in single figures and have a low hemoglobin. Can Lansoprazole can this.

Hi,

I'm not a doctor, and that's probably who you should ask this question to, but in my limited understanding, Lansoprazole reduces the amount of gastric acid produced, which may affect the digestion and absorption process, so it is possible you could run high!

Talk to your GP or Endocrinologist for an informed answer!

This is interesting - I've been on Lanzoprazole for many years now.

A quick google finds conflicting information such as:

causes increase in blood glucose levels by interfering with the release of insulin from the pancreas

and...

Constant use damages the pancreas

or...

may cause hypoglycemia, or decreased blood glucose levels

I'm certainly going to talk to my diabetes nurse about it.

I would hazard an educated guess that with such conflicting reports, any effect one way or the other is probably marginal at best. After all, metformin, which is the number one first line drug for type 2 diabetes, only has an effect at maximum dosage of around 1-2 mmol.

However, if you are on warfarin and you have had a gastric bleed, it is REALLY important that you continue to take it, at least until your doctor tells you otherwise. You will come to harm a lot quicker from an uncontrolled gastric bleed than you will from slightly raised blood sugars.

thankyou for the feed back, a bit worrying as i have had my sugars under control for 2 years, have a warfrain test on tomorrow so hopefully that end of it may be sorted out.
