ok an update went to see my diabetes nurse today and she has started me on levemir at 26 units at night .so lets see how that goes ..however she was very reluctant to prescribe me with a novopen 4 and carts instead of the flimsy disposable flexpen ..i dont understand why because as far as i am aware the cart system is cheaper..so i have gone and ordered the novopen and carts on the automated prescription website for my drs surgery and i will see if i get it or be issued again with the cr*ppy flexpen..i cant see why they would not issue it as my medication is the same ..i just dont understand why the NHS is so **** reluctant to help people deal with there diabetes in the way they see fit and in a way that is better for the patient ..i also foresee issues when i get my accu chek mobile and i order the testing cassettes for the first time on prescription..if i want reliable testing and insulin deliver systems i dont see why i should have to fight to get the **** stuff on prescription so i can control my condition better ....also i have to add with some amusment at how shocked my diabetes nurse was that i came to the appointment pre armed with all this info i had to throw at her in regards to lantus and other diabetes related stuff..im sure alot of them expect people to be stupid and just take the cr*p they tell you to and if you suffer then oh well !!...sorry but this dog aint dumb and wont be told to take something he dont wanna lol..it would seem to me the NHS is dictated to by the drug companies to peddle this (deleted) to the unsuspecting newly diagnosed and we are expected to just shut up and put up..i must say i have learned more in the last week of reading and being on this site then i ever did from my diabetes team at my local hospital in flippin 4 years of being diagnosed as type 2 :shock: ..thank the lord for you guys .

had same problems with Lantus 2 years ago.was explaned like body adaptation.that was a long time-about 2-3 months.now ok.38-40 lantus night.novorapid-10-10-12 on weekends,4-8-12 ,sometimes 4-4-12 on weekdays,depends how much work and move.(working joiner,so sometimes have to move heavy things,and run around the site,so sugar level goes down quickly)

I've just switched to lantus and noticed a stinging sensatin too, not straight away, but a couple of minutes afterwards. I find it's worse if I inject into a particularly muscly bit of thigh, or a place that I've over-used for a few years and is now a bit lumpy :?

just an update ..still feeling a litte rough around the edges but going to give the levemir a few days to get settled and the lantus out of my system compleatly..i have a brand new blue novopen 4 :mrgreen: and can say bye bye to the horrible orange novorapid flimsypen..i will admit my GP is rather good when it comes to prescribing meds and equipment ..however the diabetes nurses aint so keen ..i guess they are governed by some other higher power ..so good news so far lets see how things go :wink:

As the lantus starts to leave, you will find that Levemir injected just once a day won't control your daytime bg levels all that well. You will find that you will need to inject more bolus insulin in order to keep them ok. Levemir works best when it's injected evening and morning (split dose), it then provides a better background than using Lantus with less hypos :wink:

My daughter was put on Lantus for 4 years and she suffered mood swings, headaches and her glucose readings always fluctuated.
She was put on Levemere about 4 weeks ago, and I feel I have my old daughter back who was bubbly and her glucose readings are better and no more headaches.
While on Lantus her reading wete mainly between 15-20 and now between 5-9.

Janabelle & totsy I posted to you a note about looking into Lantus for myself, thank god I did, Now on animal for the past three weeks. Change was great felt human again trying to get my levels right on isophane and neutral porcine but I have colour in my face andmy body feels great after eight years of feeling like a wreck. Many thanks for your advice and notes on the subject, many more people on Lantus should look into this area.

Can you describe what you mean by muscle-wastage? People report pain and muscle weakness, is that what you mean? On Lantus my arms were in pain and felt weak, I noticed I couldn't carry shopping bags, and they weren't heavy ones either. My arms and wrists started to ache when I was cylcing and I wore a wrist support at times. It was definately a side-effect of Lantus, and not an uncommmon one either.
Be interested in hearing what problems you are experiencing.

That's exactly what I mean also body tissue loss one day bulk then thin. But took your advice see note 06/04/2011.

Given all of the problems and how many yellow card reports Lantus has had, how can they still be prescribing this stuff and saying that it's ok?
Sanofi-Aventis may have big pockets, but they must realize that there's something wrong, surely???

bump for a problem that has not gone away.

I was prescribed Lantus, my last HBa1 was high which was unusual, but I explained that Lantus did not dispense properly. I was told that Lantus was to be discontinued in December 2011. I am now on Lantus Optiset and have experienced no problems.

Hi Janabelle...........brand new to the forum and so I hope you get this. My partner is type 1 and is having tremendous problems with musle and joint pain, exhaution, bad control. Iwant to find out more about the lantus thing as that is what he is currently on. Also picked up some where that statins can also be linked to joint/muscle pain. Can you help?
Also how do I find out how to navigate this site?

Wonder if you can give me an update on Lantus and myalgia as there havent been any recent posts. My husband is very unwell with what looks like the symptoms you and others described........joint and muscle pain and all the rest. Its crippling him and Im not sure the docs will take on board that lantus might be to blame and probably statins as well..........double whammy!

Diagnosed with diabetes and being treated as type 1 2009. So after put on carb counting with novorapid and levemir. I was 60 years old at that time and avg. weight 73kgs. I ended up on 100 units split dose but had become very tired and felt drugged up but no aching joints. Also problems with BMs dropping very quickly when I do any physical work. I can be 10 BMs after finishing work, sit down for half hour and straight into hypo. I've had to reduce my working week to 28 hours. In nearly 3 years I must have had about a total of 6 months when I've felt GOOD. Most of the time it's the tiredness/exhaustion, and I end up walking very slowly. At the moment I'm on lantus avg 24 units, but I'm always having problems with highs and lows mainly when I'm feeling bad. My local DSN says that she is unable to offer a solution as she dosn't know what is causing the quick dropping BMs when I do physical work/DIY and the tiredness/drugged up feelings. Over the 3 years I've had to have time of work due to exhaustion. I read from this forum and the forum 'tiredness and lantus' that many diabetics have a problem with levemir and lantus. I am now waiting for my GP to refer me to a diabetic specalist in Cambridge. I live in King's Lynn, Norfolk. I am now trying a reduced carb diet so that I can reduce my insluin as I may be having problems with 'human' insulin and would to to try porcine insulin. My diabetic consultant has tested me for all the usual tiredness causes like iron, thyroids ect and even peeing a lot I had my prostate checked out ...all ok. He had not suggested that the insulin may be the problem so I praying that the DR. in Cambridge can up up with s good soultion.

What part does the lack of Vit D play regarding diabetics who have problems with lantus. I seem to have all the tiredness/drugged up feelings/exhaustion as most suffers but my joints are fine. I get no pain. I just have the tiredness and problems with quickly dropping BMs when I do any physical work/DIY/cutting the grass..with an electric mower!!!!

I did ask the diabetic nurse at the surgery for a vit D test but she said that she didnot know how to do it but wait until I can be referred to a diabetic specialist in Cambridge. Hopefully my GP will get a reply from my DSN and then can contact Cambridge. I had to take a day off work on Thursday as I was exhausted.

hi, have been reading these with great interest. janabelle has been such a support and help in the past. thank you.
i will keep reading, but for now i will say that a couple of years ago i got taken off levemir split dose and put on an animal insulin by my own request. i can't say my sugars changes that much but i felt better in myself.
my diabetes dr decided this wasn;t enough last year and put me back on to glargine. my bloods fluctuate as much as ever. i have gained weight. i have achy joints and chronic fatigue.
i have had a 3 month trial of byetta but it made me feel so sick and although i lost weight it wasn't what you'd expect of someone barely eating for 3 months.
i am very insulin resistent
i have mangaged to get a prescription for gliclazide and have been on it about 3 weeks now, there are some changes but i can't say anything definate yet.
through january i was able to do more physical work and it was great. now i am back to having to take a lift rather than stairs and i am so so tired.
unfortuantly other pains are breaking through as well.
i have fibromyalgia which was under better control. but i get a lot of contact tingling in my fingers from anythiing i touch. including the computer. i cannot write for more than a few sentences without my fingers and wrists aching.
my dr doesn't go for animal insulins. they believe they are all so similar it doesn't make any difference,
my diabetes type has been questioned, i am type 1, but apparently any conclusive tests should have been done 20 years ago.

so i feel like ****. my dr at last check up says he does not know what has been protecting me from diabetic complications...perhaps the long acting...well theres a comfort!

now i have been sent back to CBT for the chronic fatigue, can't say i am getting anywhere with that as i have waited months and had two appointment. :shock:
