Leaky kidneys

Went to see DSN today and was told this, still have protein in urine. Have to get further bloods done in a few weeks. I was hoping it was just the UTI I had. Also now on meds to lower cholesterol but BP down a bit and BG stabilising so not all bad. I was wondering if the protein thing is likely to be ongoing now???? Pretty scary if it is. I was only diagnosed with Diabetes 25 days ago( but have been told I have been diabetic for years) and so much to take in, what's happening now and what it might mean for the future. The foot check was not too bad but the Doppler test showed one spot with thready pulse. I just hadn't expected any of this yet, I thought I would be much older before I got health problems. Hey ho, so much for healthy diets and exercising all these years. Only consolation is if I had been on junk food and the sofa it would probably have been worse! Oh and I have been prescribed BG test strips/lancets but only 2 lots a YEAR!

Firstly try not to worry to much about the protein in the urine a UTI can cause strange readings and an increase in protein. Also a higher BP can also cause protein to be pushed out as well. Protein in the urine can be a harmless symptom of other problems that are more serious though such as kidney problems. This is what I ended up with. But there are many other causes of protein in the urine so its nothing to panic about.

A couple of things to possibly ask about when you get the results of your next urine test normally they would check your protein levels a few months after being placed onto meds for the bp etc to see if they have helped. You can ask how your kidney function is doing and also how much protein your leaking they will let you know if the amounts are low or like in my case huge. They will then discuss possible causes.

Thats all from my personal experiences to where I am now but right now im only 25 and had all this diagnosed at 24 unfortunately illness gets us whenever it wants. Try to keep positive and not worry. if you want any more specifics etc just let me know.
 
thanks Mehdave, good advice. I know I am lucky to have been healthy for most of my life and things could be much worse for me so I will try and keep things in perspective. I will ask the questions when the next lot of blood results come through. One thing I have learned is to see a GP when I'm not well, not just think I will get better without medical intervention. About 2 years ago I went because of horrific leg pains and they found protein then but I had antibiotics (and a Doppler test which was about the same as now) but because I felt better after a couple of weeks I didn't respond to call back. Looking back, and isn't hindsight a wonderful thing? I think that was the start of my Diabetes as apart from a few periods of feeling OK I started to feel ill a lot then developed all the classic symptoms but also morning sickness which went on for months before I went to the GP. This has only subsided since I started Diabetes treatment.
Anyway, lesson learned. Thank you again for your help and offer of help again if I need it, cheers x
 
Jenfy, remember that it takes time for treatment to have an effect. The longer you keep your Bgs under control the more it is likely that any other complications will be brought under control as well. You have already noticed that your morning sickness has improved.

I had a few of the usual complications but after about 3 months of getting my BGs down they simply faded away, now I can feel my big toes and I do not get fungal infections any more.

Hi, I have/had leaky kidneys too...and have had for about 15 years. Over the past 12 however, I have really stepped up my control, and I am very proud to say, that on my last drs visit, they told me that I no longer have "proteinurea".

I think, but do not know for sure, thatthis is due to 2 things. Much, much better control, and a drug called ACE inhibitors.

Some Drs believe that all diabetics should be on ACE inhibitors, a, as well as helping BP, they also protect the kidneys. I am not a DR, do I am certainly telling you to take some...but if they haven't discussed them wuiith you, it mighht be wiorth asking?

As you have only just been diagnosed, you are probably styill seeing the side effects of not treating your diabetes...but, now that you are, the hope is that these symptoms, like your morning sickness will subside.

Thank everyone, I hope you are right and things will settle down after a while. The ACE inhibitors sound like a very good idea. I had assumed that once proteinurea started I would have it forever! Learning all the time thanks to the vast knowledge of the people on this forum. Thank you again x
