So I am coping quite well with the low carb diet since my diabetes diagnosis. I was also told I had a 'fatty liver' I'm not a huge drinker - 2 or 3 times a month - but just wondering if I should cut the booze completely - even if only until and if my liver improves.. I do have liver pain almost every day..
It definitely can't hurt to stop - and likely it will speed up the reversal process. If you haven't already seen this blogpost, I'd highly recommend it:
If you have liver pain everyday i would stop the alvohol immediately ! Full stop !,
I think most of us have the fatty livers though
I dont wish to alarm you but my brother died from liver failure from alcohol about 10 years ago, only 48 at the time ,he was fit and was a construction worker, trouble is he drank everyday
No cure for no liver failure,he did try beetroot juices etc but it didnt help,he was too far gone, they couldnt do anymore for him
It would do you no harm at all to cut out booze and fruit for a while to speed up the process of emptying the liver of its excess fat stores. This does not have to be a permanent approach. Good luck.
Edited to add.
I was diagnosed with fatty liver and suffered pain but within a few months the pain disappeared and at my second review my Liver function markers had returned to normal. I am teetotal. You do not have to be alcoholic to develope fatty liver, the term used is NAFLD i.e Non Alcohol Fatty Liver Disease and this condition is fully reversible with dietary changes that result in the stored fats being used up.
Hi @ EllenW,
You probably need to check with your doctor before diagnosing yourself with liver pains. You may be correct but may be better to make sure.
Also while you have his/her attention ask whether losing weight is likely to help reduce your fatty liver.
Best Wishes !!

Prof. Roy Taylor (he of ND fame) and co originator of the zooped up MRI which measures liver fats says that ectopic fats i.e those stored around the organs rather than subcutaneously are the first fat stores to be lost after weight loss measures are taken. Of these ectopic fats the liver's fat is the first in line to go.
Great news for those of us with T2 because it means that if we hit a (body weight) weight loss stall the liver and other organs will still benefit.
NB. All persistant symptoms should, I agree, be further investigated.
I've always wondered how we can know if the pain is coming from the liver or the gallbladder, given how close they are. Is there a difference in the type of pain, location, etc?

The pain I had was lower right rib area. I think, though not sure, pain emanating from the gall bladder is middle/upper right rib area.
The liver pain I had was a dull, thudding achey pain. The gall bladder, when it is stones that are the problem, cause a very sharb, stabbing pain.
I had an ultrasound scan which diagnosed my fatty liver - shortly after my diabetes diagnosis .. Thank you for your replies - tee total for me for a while..
