Hi there,

I'm Steph. I'm almost 28 years old and I will have had type 1 for 18 years on my birthday.

It's been a struggle, to say the least. I've been through it all - diabetes ketoacidosis through to diabetic retinopathy, and I'm only 27! I'm not proud of myself and feel like it's an up hill battle every day.

But enough about me... I'm looking for you! Someone of a similar age, or who has had diabetes as long or longer than me. I really could do with having a 'pen pal' to talk to about all of the diabetes madness as well as some to sound off too. Doctors are fab, but lets be frank, most of them aren't diabetic and don't really know what is going on in side most of the time.

So, If you feel up to chatting and taking me under your wing, or if you have any suggestions of groups I could join that would be fab!
I live in the West London area.

Hey Steph,

I'm Matt, am 26 and have had diabetes for 15 years.

In those 15 years I've learnt nothing, am rubbish at looking after myself, and results are always rubbish. Too high or too low, can never get to that bit in the middle. Your right docs and nurses are good, but they don't have diabetes and don't know how it really effects us.

I'm 28 and have had diabetes for 23yrs, and still i'm learning new things.
Not sure how much advice i'll be able to give but always up for a chat to pass the time of day.

Hi I am Natalie, 31 been t1 diabetic for 8 years

I have never had good control, feel awful with high sugar, and have 10.1 average. I am trying to learn to count my carbs and match my insulin by myself and really need to take control of things as my health is suffering.

I am willing to help and for us to learn together [FACE SAVOURING DELICIOUS FOOD]

Hi everyone,
I'm 29 - not looking forward to the next birthday! I've been diabetic for nearly 10 years. Initial control was not good, was petrified of hypos - HbA1c in the 8s and 9s. Now got good control. HbA1c 6.1%, can go a few weeks without being in double figures, have a hypo in the high 3s about once per fortnight. All down to low carbing - makes good control EASY!
 
Hi everyone!

I'm 28 and had type 1 for about 15years. Currently on a pump (been on it for about 1.5 years). My control is currently good due to low carbing, but prior to this it has been all over the place!!

I'm 29 (at least for a couple of weeks!) diabetic for 19 1/2 years :-( on a pump but still not got great control, last hba1c was 8.3 but full of hypos and hi readings. Trying the low carb route to see if that helps but struggling to say good bye to bread and mashed potato :-(
Always happy to chat it can feel very lonely being a diabetic x

Im Emma. 29. Diabetic since I was 6 (wow, has it really been that long?!).

Diabetes is fairly well controlled now but there is definitely room for improvement. Control was awful when I was a teenager. And I really do mean awful. I was admitted to hospital just before my 17th birthday with DKA. Thankfully, that's the only time I have been hospitalised due to my diabetes.

I was told that I had background retinopathy a few years ago. Had my last test about a month ago and have been referred to the eye hospital for more tests. Trying (but failing) not to panic too much about this until I know more!

Anyway, I'm based in Surrey but was born and raised in Newcastle. I've been down here for eight years now and have made surprisingly little progress in my battle to correct the 'glass' vs. 'glarss' confusion

I'm going to stop rambling now

Matt, Laura, Aysha, Richard, Aimee, Becky, Scarlet - because I'm new to this site, I can't private message you all, but I really would like to see what your experience has been like and to see how you are all handling it.

Even though its been 18 years, I still haven't got to grips with it.

My granddad passed away this year from diabetic complications (he was on the pump, they took it off him, he got very ill, they put him back on injections and one thing lead to another...) I really don't want my family to go through anything like that with me!

I am trying, but it is like battling jelly! Strange analogy!

You've all made my day by posting, so thanks a million!

Battling jelly sounds about right! It's not fun, it's not easy and let's face it none of us would chose it! We are stuck with it though and sometimes it's a toss up between being well behaved and a little indulgence! Unfortunately I'm way too keen on the indulgences!! X

I'm more of a sweet toothed person - chocolate and all things sugary - yum!
