Hi my 7 year old granddaughter is newly diagnosed type 1, she is due a 15 carb snack after dinner but she is wanting 35 carbs, if I was to give her the 35 carbs should I insulin her on 35 carbs or insulin her on 20 carbs.(minus the 15 carbs for snack)

Sorry to hear about the diagnoses, must be frightening at the moment, it does get easier!
Does she normally have a snack and her blood sugar stays in range? If so i would suggest only injecting for the 20g, it is very much trial and error if she runs a little high you know for next time to inject more

she has a snack every 2 hours after a meal and this keeps her levels in range, tonight she wanted extra but I was a bit worried as was unsure so had to say no to her which I felt bad about.

How long has your grand kid been diagnosed?
What insulin/s is she prescribed?
There is a concern that if the youngling is needing to snack to stay in range after just two hours of a meal, It could cause further hypos with stacked insulin??
Is she low when she snacks???
Hi Joe, apart from the advice you already had, I'd urge you to speak this through with your granddaughter's diabetes nurse as well.
Seven year olds are by nature pretty unpredictable in what they want and not want to eat at a given moment (heck, I still am unpredictable on that front, and I'm 43).
For me, diabetes is pretty well managable by adjusting my insulin to what I eat, not having set times and set amounts of carbs. I can imagine this would be the goal for your granddaugher as well. Which is where her DSN can be a huge help!
