Hey guys.. My eyesight has recent;y ( August 2016) gone poor enough for me to act on it.. as a result I was prescribed glasses to improve vision at distance, they worked a treat for about a fortnight.. then it appeared that my eyesight had improved and I could no longer use the new glasses. Since then I went to a different optician who after an eye test told me that I required reading glasses instead and that my other glasses were no good for me. He advised me to see my GP.. which I did and after a blood test was told that my glucose level was sky high at 139. I was diagnosed as diabetic and am being treated as type1 until the results of a new blood test comes back. Since starting my new life of needles and insulin jabs I am noticing further deterioration of my sight. I can see but can't focus. My nurse says that my vision should improve again once my levels are steady again. Have any of you had this or a similar experience?

well my eyesight didn´t improve , but many do get their normal eyesight back again as soon as the raised blood glucose inside their eyes lowers , which takes some weeks more than in the rest of your body...but it is important to get the numbers low again...

wish you good luck...

It's quite common for newly diagnosed people to have blurred vision for a few weeks until their diabetic control improves - raised blood glucose causes increased glucose levels in the lens of the eye which changes its ability to focus light. As the blood glucose levels return to normal, so do the levels in the lens and hence the vision.

Blurred vision can also be caused by diabetic retinopathy affecting the macula but this should be picked up at the diabetic eye screening appointment which everyone should be offered within 3 months of diagnosis.

About christmas time last year I started to feel rough my right foot went numb and my eyes started to give me trouble I thought it was just circulation problem I had,had an operation end of October. I carried on until early march went to see doc' who did blood test next day I was in hospital. confirmed with diabetis. My left eye is still causing me a problem my BG levels I am keeping good, I am due to go back to the hospital soon and hopefully get some satisfaction with my eye amongst other things. In an evening I wear an eye patch while I watch the box it seems to help. You are not the only one having problems and people will pass on information that maybe of help to you

Typically people become more long sighted shortly after the sugar levels have gone down and find they need reading glasses too until the eyes readjust which typically takes 6-8 weeks. Eyesight ends up often a bit different from what it was before, but more often than not it is fairly similar, but it can also be quite different a some above seem to have. It possibly depends on how long the sugar level has been elevated before diagnosis.

Your experience suggests you may have actually had even higher sugar level when your first set of glasses were prescribed.

I had blurry vision when first diagnosed-it was the symptom that lead me to make an appointment outside my annual checkup with my doctor. I also just generally felt awful and had some intermittent pain in my feet. I had already been on diet and exercise for long standing borderline diabetes but the additional problems developed as I worked full time and attended classes at night to complete a degree. I already had glasses but my vision was becoming so blurry I could not read or complete homework at times-I would have to wait until my vision cleared to do it. My vision actually improved to a little better than before once I stabilized on metformin. The pain in my feet also cleared up.
The blurry vision returned as my blood glucose again went out of range a few years later as I was caregiving fulltime while working on my master's degree fulltime as well. I just did not have time to exercise as I had before and my diet became one of convenience rather than good nutrition. My vision again returned to better than before when I stabilized again-this time on insulin. My diabetic eye exams have always shown "no diabetic changes". I appear to have been lucky enough to catch it in time twice.

@SWUSA_ Thank you for asking... Yes I meant that my HbA1c was 139.. and is the reason for me being treated as type1. I had a blood test to confirm either type 1 or 2 but am still awaiting results. As for my sight... I am happy to say that it is improving though I am using what were prescribed reading glasses to see normally. I discovered that I have family members with type2 recently so maybe there is a genetic link. Current meds are Novorapid 3 units before each meal and 12 units Lantus... soon to be Toujeo once a day.
