So last year I went low carb and I went into DKA and was told I’m not type 2 I’m type 1. It’s been a year and my weight is going up and up since starting insulin.
I spoke to the diabetic nurse and she told me because I take 6 units of tresiba In a morning that I can low carb and it will cover me from producing too many ketones.

I was wondering if any type 1s low carb and what number ketones I should worry about when on low carb and taking insulin. I know about ketosis when low carbing and not diabetic but not sure about been diabetic and safe ketosis levels.

I don’t ever want dka again so I want to get it right.

Thanks

I'm type 1 and do low-carb. I understand that DKA is caused by high blood sugar and high ketones. I have never had DKA as far as I know. The reason I low-carb is to keep my blood sugars stable, which I check several types a day, often early enough after eating to get an idea of how high my bloods go. Low-carb works well for me.

So great full for your reply, thank you
I’m on day 3 and my bloods are excellent which is great. When I went into dka last time my bloods were in the normal range. It’s rarer but it does happen.

However insulin keeps ketones at bay so I’ve rang diabetic nurse to give me a call to discuss in depth

Maybe buy a keto meter to make sure you're in the proper range? Nutritional ketosis is supposedly between 0.5-3.0 mmol/L. If you stay reliably in that range then I wouldn't worry.
