Low unawareness

I just had a very sudden low without any warning. It happened so quickly and I almost passed out before I realized what was happening. Fortunately, I was home and able to think clearly enough to get something to eat when I just wanted to fall on the floor and stay there. Not to be overly dramatic, but that was very scary for me. Had I been out hiking by myself It could have been quite serious. Often I go hiking by myself and now I don't know if that is a good idea anymore since I was unaware of the low. The thought of losing some independence is humbling. Are there some suggestions on developing low awareness? I was diagnosed type 1 in March, 2016 so still pretty new at this.

If this is a single incident then don't worry too much. It has happened to me in the past and in general, I retain very good awareness.

If you're out hiking then you might want to check your glucose levels more frequently?
