hi, my sone a type 1 and has been for 3 years hes now 5 but for the last 2 weeks hes had a metalic smell to his breath its pretty strong , ive tried ringing his nurse but shes on holiday , does anyone know what this could be? x

Hi. Is your son running high BG levels, if so check his ketones. If present they can cause smelly breath and will indicate a need for an increase in insulin doses. Other causes can be gum disease resulting in bleeding gums but I'm sure you will have noticed if this is the case. Hope this helps

hes had more lows no ighs, he hasnt got any keytones, and his gums seem fine its funny its worse sumtimes xx

It could also possibly be a bacterial or fungal overgrowth in the mouth or on the back of the throat. This is fairly common and will settle itself in regular people but in diabetics spikes after eating in the blood sugar can make biofilms take off like they're living in paradise. have a good look round with a torch and see if there's any white or creamy patches. If it doesn't settle might be worth a trip to the GP where he can take a swab and give you something to counteract anything that's taken hold.
