This is fascinating and thank you for posting it! I am actually a type 1 diabetic of 34 years and have been down the statin route! It has taken me several attempt to tolerate metformin but the more I read the more I am tying to take it! It is having good effects on my insulin levels that I take and I have been able to reduce my daily insulin intake. I am now hoping I can shed a little weight I have been holding over the last few years!
Getting back to your study!!
One of the main reasons I am continuing with Metformin is because I have read extensively on the drug and from what I have read it is not only an alternative to statins but it also has a protective effect on the heart in a similar way(Is that correct?) as your study seems to also indicate. I didn't get on with statins and my overall cholesterol could be lower but good cholesterol is good, so ignoring GP advice I am avoiding Statins but favouring Metformin! It is a tough ride tolerating Metfromin, I am continuing because not only are my BG's better I am hopeful of the long term effects on my health!
