I'm a type 1 diabetic and have been for nearly 20 years. I have recently been put on metformin which seems to be working. I have increased the dose by 1 tablet a week for the past 4 weeks and am now on 4 tablets of 500mg a day. Could anyone tell me how long the side effects will last? I have been feeling nauseous in the afternoons and some evenings and generally tired at times. It's not unbearable but just unpleasant. Anyone had a similar experience??

Some members have found using the SR (slow release) version of Metformin has fewer side-effects.

Thank you I have a review in October to see how it's going but I was hoping that things would improve as I got used to the metformin, really wanted to know how long to persevere?

Did the nausea start just when you added the 4th tablet? Because if it did, you could go back to 3 tablets, for example, and spend a bit longer at that level before trying 4 again. And/or try to get some SR metformin soonish rather than wait until october?

It's been pretty much since the start I was just hoping someone would say it will pass after a certain time period but I guess it's different in everyone.

I know how you feel, I've been on it for a week. Just two a day, but I need to increase to three a day. I can't face it so I'll try next week. We have to fight it or change to the SR version if this keeps up. They say allow a couple of weeks for the side effects to calm down. I'm running out of toilet paper!

I hope you start to feel better soon x

Yes, it is different in everyone I'm afraid. If we say 2 weeks or another set time period we could be putting you wrong.

Thanks guys! I will persist for a couple of weeks and see how things go! Xxx
